Winter Glamour

Fashion designer Carolina Herrera is known for her classy, ladylike designs. While going through my archive of photos from New York Fashion Week, I came across her sumptuous winter collection from 2014. I couldn’t help but think of Jackie Kennedy during her years in the White House. The looks are reminiscent of the simple and classic lines created for that famous first lady by Oleg Cassini, and her hats by Halston. Ms.Herrara’s runway show covered the gamut from day suits and dresses, to outerwear and glamorous evening attire–all in one collection! There is quite a bit of inspiration to be taken from the dramatic, yet wearable pieces that came down the catwalk. They could easily be open to interpretation for the average person by pinpointing key elements of the designs. Take a look at my slideshow below and then get your winter chic ready by finding similar items with a similar look and feel.

Doggone DIY!

Jack Frost is still nipping at your nose, and you can bet he’s nipping at your pets too! As an animal lover, I started adopting senior dogs, as well as special needs dogs, many years ago. One thing I’ve found to be true with the miniature dogs I’ve taken in, is that they’re always looking to snuggle up in a blanket whenever they can. So, this week I’ll show you how to make a super-simple DIY doggie sweater that your pets will LOVE! You could also make these as gifts for friends or family members with pets!  

Cozy Christmas

Home for the holidays conjures up happy meetings and greetings of family and friends in casual settings of all kinds. Visiting homes, seeing the holiday lights, Christmas shopping and all the rest helps bring the season of giving into focus for many of us at this time of year. Dressing the part has never been easier with the wealth of resources available to you at Goodwill! There are elements that make an outfit cozy, comfy, as well as winter wonderful, so let’s take a look. 

Fashion Fixers!

When it comes to winter coats and sweaters, there’s nothing quite like that feeling of warmth and comfort during the sometimes harsh winter months. But, are you a Goodwill shopper that knows how to revive and refresh woolen sweaters, coats and outerwear? As we always say at Goodwill–reduce, reuse and recycle, but I always add REVIVE to our famous mantra.  

Sweater Weather

There is nothing quite like putting on a warm and cozy sweater to make everything all right with the world isn’t there? It’s like being wrapped in comfort and security. My favorite is a gray cashmere v-neck pullover that I can layer over t-shirts and other items.

Mad for Plaid

For many people fall and winter is all about being cozy and warm. But, to me it also evokes certain patterns that just “feel” more seasonal. Take the traditional red plaid pattern, for example. According to Wikipedia, “Tartan is a pattern consisting of criss-crossed horizontal-and-vertical bands in multiple colors. Tartans originated in woven wool, but now they’re made in many other materials. Tartan is particularly associated with Scotland. Scottish kilts almost always have tartan patterns.” 

Falling for Fashion

The autumn and winter fashion shows I attend in New York City are held in February, but they do reflect the season(s) ahead. One particular collection by Joanna Mastroianni from the A/W show of 2013 really stood out for a variety of reasons. It illustrates what makes us excited and interested in fashion. Mastroianni combines luxurious fabrics with stunning styling to create contemporary glamour that stands the test of time. As you’ll see in this slideshow of her work, it’s hard to place a time period on her work. It’s both classic and new all at the same time.

Early last Saturday morning I joined a few hundred folks at the Boston Store in Mayfair Mall for an exclusive in-store runway show of the latest fall fashions from some of the biggest names in retail.

Elbow Room

Have you ever wondered why those elongated oval patches are placed over the elbows on sport coats and sweaters? I always assumed it was because of wear on the elbows—sort of like a patch on the knee on a kid’s pair of pants. So, as I did a little research, I found that I was totally correct!

When we think of early fall and the coming winter we start to cozy up to the idea of changes in our wardrobe. Sweaters, boots and scarves start to come out of drawers, closets and storage to replace our t-shirts, sandals and shorts. But, is there anything new when it comes to autumnal fashion?

Fashion Week Explained

Why should anyone care about fashion? I’ve heard that line many times in my life, probably more than I care to count! The answer to that question isn’t simple, but I’ll try to put it all into perspective. Twice a year I travel to New York City to take in the spectacle that is Fashion Week. During this week, clothing designers, both famous and not so famous, preview their ideas about style in order to receive feedback about what we, the public, will want to wear. 

Coat Tales
