The autumn and winter fashion shows I attend in New York City are held in February, but they do reflect the season(s) ahead. One particular collection by Joanna Mastroianni from the A/W show of 2013 really stood out for a variety of reasons. It illustrates what makes us excited and interested in fashion. Mastroianni combines luxurious fabrics with stunning styling to create contemporary glamour that stands the test of time. As you’ll see in this slideshow of her work, it’s hard to place a time period on her work. It’s both classic and new all at the same time.
“My collection is for all women who love to dress modern, feminine, flirty, with couture details, and special embroideries,” says Mastroianni, a Manhattan-based designer who has dressed many celebrities, including Alicia Keys, Christina Ricci, Molly Sims, Beyonce and Eva Longoria (to name but a few).
What I want you to focus on when viewing this collection are the details Mastroianni loves when it comes to embellishments. The contrast between shiny-and-matte fabrics create a visual sense of movement on even the most simple silhouettes. Additionally, her use of fur, feathers, beading and sequins on some of her cocktail dresses and evening wear could certainly be appropriate for the holiday season ahead.
Elements in all of the looks here could be interpreted to suit anyone. One special piece that has a metallic cast in it can really dress up whatever you’re wearing—by day or by night.
When you’re out shopping at Goodwill, fashion inspiration could just be a few racks away, so explore and step outside of your comfort zone! You’ll be glad you did, and we’ll be glad you supported our mission.
