Winter 2016-2017 Home Trends

Winter décor tends to drift into hues of green, red, gold and silver. We love those tones, but every once in a while the season could use a splash of something different! That’s where this year’s winter trends come in; their unexpected textures and hues are just what the crisp season called for. Once you’ve had your fun outdoors, head on inside and enjoy crimson red, floor cushions, faux-fur and rattan.

Crimson RedCrimson Red

Why it made the list:

Red with rich hints of black… this just screams luxury! When added to home décor elements, like accent walls and picture frames, this timeless yet ominous hue gives that something-special our homes are looking for.

Pull it off:

This rich color should be used subtly in order to easily work its way into your current home décor. We love the look of colorful frames or mirrors. If you can’t find one in the crimson red you want, do-it-yourself! Goodwill has a great selection of frames that can easily be painted to incorporate this season’s color trend. Other accessories that work great in crimson red are pillows, throws, and entryway rugs.

Floor CushionsFloor Cushions

Why they made the list:

Imagine the snow falling outside, a cup of hot cocoa in your hands, and a classic holiday favorite on the television. All that’s missing is your cozy seat! That’s where floor cushions come in. You’ll love the lounge vibe they provide to your home décor. Functional yet stylish!

Pull them off:

The skies the limit with this trend! You can pull from a variety of inspirations in order to insert a floor cushion into your home décor. We think it’s best to first choose whether your floor cushion will be seasonal, or a year-round addition. If you’re looking for something winter specific, navigate toward cozy knit or velvet textures. If you’re instead looking for a year-round piece, your current décor is your inspiration; a modern home calls for a polka-dot or geometric pattern. A casual, bohemian home calls for a floor cushion in a variety of textures and patterns stitched together.

Bonus: make your own custom floor cushion! Head to Goodwill for a variety of clothing and/or bedding pieces in the color, texture and pattern of your choosing. A simple online search will help you find the sewing pattern, and you can stuff it with pillow filling. Voila!

Faux-fur
Faux Fur

Why it made the list:

Faux-fur can be a lot of fun to decorate with. It’s cozy and chic - just what winter calls for! This fun texture provides a lot of bang for your décor buck, so you don’t have to use it in large places throughout your home… which also means your design budget doesn’t get busted. Bonus! Head to the clothing section of Goodwill for faux-fur fabric options. Many vests and jackets will have a lining that can be used for your DIY faux-fur projects!

Pull it off:

Just remember that less is more! Small touches of faux-fur on pillows, blankets or even seat cushions work best. Faux-fur can easily work all year long when used appropriately. Look for shades of creams and whites that can easily nestle into the rest of your décor.

rattanRattan

Why it made the list:

While this trend was certainly an unexpected one for the winter months, rattan is great for so many reasons! Its durability makes for long-lasting décor pieces, and it’s a renewable resource – how can you top that?

Pull it off:

You’ll quickly find rattan in detail pieces, such as chair seats and framing on mirrors or picture frames. Goodwill is a great place to snag sturdy rattan pieces, so be sure to keep an eye out for it. While you can transition rattan in your any of your current home décor pretty seamlessly, we love to see it used as the stand-out piece in entryway benches or tables, bathroom vanities or a small kitchen nook.
