Cinco de Mayo Crafts

According to History.com, Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army's 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867). In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage. No matter your nationality, there are many ways to take part in this festive time of year. Using items from Goodwill, you can decorate your home in one of both of the craft projects below!

Festive Decorations

Home Decor Expert Merri always has the best ways to bring a festive vibe to the home! For Cinco de Mayo, she has given us her Top 5 Design Tips to make your guests say "Olé!"

  • Set up your food and drink station buffet style. Decorate by draping a serape on an angle over a basic white table cloth. This will give a truly authentic feel to your table! Can't find an authentic serape? Shop the shelves at Goodwill for a colorful sheet or curtain with a striped pattern to it!
  • Get creative with serving dishes. Use the turned up brim of a sombrero as a chip bowl. Push in the crown so your dish of guacamole or salsa fits inside! Canning and mason jars work perfectly for serving casual drinks too. Goodwill has a great selection of jars, so check our shelves to keep the cost of your party down!
  • Fill tall glass punch bowls or hurricane candle holders with colorful peppers for your buffet table centerpiece. For a centerpiece you can continue to use, check a craft store for plastic food. You can reuse the peppers year after year, and you don't have to worry about wasting food! Then, head to Goodwill for a variety of bowls and vases in various sizes.
  • Make giant colorful tissue paper flowers to decorate your table. These can be hung or simply placed down the middle of your table for a colorful effect! Martha Stewart Crafts provides a simple how-to when it comes to tissue paper flowers.
  • Light the way to your front door with luminaries. You can easily make them by punching holes in paper bags, in any design/pattern that you wish. Next, fill the bottom of the bag with a little sand to add some weight. Place a candle in a glass votive and voila! Line your luminaries on either side of your driveway to give guests a warm greeting!
