Mellow Yellow

Mellow YellowYellow keeps company on the color spectrum by residing between green and orange. Yellow has been associated with the beauty of nature like these lemons in the market of Valencia Spain, as well as golden sunshine, marigolds, buttercups, and the common dandelion. The color has been universally recognized for its association with happiness, prosperity, and pleasure wherever it’s used. It’s also one of fashion’s easiest colors to wear, yet seemingly the most frightening for people to commit to! Once again this week I’ll show you some of my photographic work from my coverage of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York City, and point out the way we can utilize the ideas they convey.

Mellow YellowBackstage at one of the shows, “Fashion Police,” star Kelly Osbourne rocked a vintage yellow and black-polka dot frock. This was before she went with the violet locks, but I feel she gets it right here. It’s cute, flirty, and very girlish. The accessories are over the top, but I think she looks like a Broadway baby. A cute dress in a bright color like yellow takes well to contrasting accessories …

Mellow YellowAt the (Andrew) Buckler show, which was held out on the street in Soho in lower Manhattan, pops of yellow populated many of the menswear maker’s urban looks. A pair of yellow jeans would be a great addition to anyone’s wardrobe for summer. Once again they play well with the contrast of the black pieces, as well as the black-and-white print slouchy t-shirt. On another model we see the use of yellow for his retro headphones, as well as a lemon-yellow zip front hoodie that’s been done in a lightweight wool. Personally, I own a pair of Dolce & Gabbana painted yellow denim pants from a discount retailer in NYC, yellow leather tennis shoes (that I purchased at Goodwill), yellow aviator sunglasses (also from Goodwill), and a black-and-yellow Marc Jacobs belt that I got from a friend. These are items I wear often because they always work so brilliantly with simple black and other color items, and people always notice them.

Mellow YellowAt brilliant designer Chris Benz’s show a few seasons back, we saw his adaptation of a luncheon suit. The lace jacket that is worn over the two-tier skirt is pretty conservative, but the color and accessories make it more modern and cool. Notice the woven macramé necklace, soft clutch bag and t-strap high-heeled shoes. Great for attending a June wedding!

Mellow YellowAt the Mataan show held in a converted church, the buttery shade stood out in a couple looks. An easy summer romper-type jumpsuit is very classic and accessorized simply with gold bangles and high-heeled sandals. A boat-neck cotton knit sweater and linen pencil skirt reinvent the classy, yet sexy silhouette. It’s accessorized well with white high-heeled sandals, a patent clutch and a few delicate gold necklaces.

So, step into the light of the fashion world this summer season! It’s so easy to simply go to your local Goodwill store and make a bee-line to the sunny side of style! Thank you for supporting our mission and truly going for the gold!
