Fashion Play

sweater dressAre there rules to follow when dressing for a trip to the theatre to see a play or musical? You bet there are! Just like so many situations we have in life, what we wear depends entirely on what we’re doing, and where we’re going. I look at it like this - would you wear the same outfit you go grocery shopping in to attend a theatrical production? The obvious answer is of course, no!  Although many people would beg to differ I’m sure. Now is your chance to dress up using my practical tips AND save money on theatre tickets, too! Our neighbors at the Milwaukee Chamber Theatre are offering $10 off the ticket price exclusively to Goodwill and Retique shoppers for any performance during the run of their production of the comedy “Things Being What They Are” from November 20th to December 15th, 2013. To get your $10 off, just mention “GOODWILL” when ordering at the box office or by phone at 414-291-7800, or you may also purchase tickets online at www.milwaukeechambertheatre.com with the coupon code: GOODWILL (restrictions apply). The play will be held at the Broadway Theatre Center, 158 North Broadway in Milwaukee’s chic and Historic Third Ward.

grey sweaterThe rule of thumb when attending any event that is out of your ordinary realm would be to dress differently than you would for things you do on an everyday basis. That makes some sense doesn’t it? In other words just because you wear jeans and t-shirts all the time, doesn’t mean they are appropriate for what is a special occasion such as going to a show downtown.  Men and women too, sweater dress2need to think in terms of “casual elegance.” This could mean slacks and a shirt and sweater for the guys, or even slacks, shirt, tie and jacket combo. For the ladies a knit dress, or dress slacks, blouse and jacket would be totally appropriate. Nice office attire is completely fitting as long as it’s not what you wear on "casual Friday." Keep in mind that you’ll be sitting for a few hours so don’t wear anything too constricting. Having a jacket or cardigan on will also help you navigate the temperature of the theatre that can literally run hot and cold sometimes. At least with those layering-type garments you’ll have options.

Mens winter fashionPlain is fine, as long as it isn’t super casual. The elegant part can come in with your jewelry, shoes, handbag, or other accessories that will make an ensemble special and classy, just like your night at the theatre!

What you shouldn’t wear are things that call too much attention to yourself. A sequined mini dress might be great for going clubbing, but remember that the people onstage are in the spotlight here, not you!

fashion trendsAny event worth going to should require suitable attire. A great outfit can really enhance the enjoyment you get out of doing something special with your friends and family. If you don’t have anything to wear, may I suggest that you take the $10 that you save on your ticket, and head to Goodwill to see what amazing things you might find for your big night out?  While you may not be onstage, your continuing support of our mission is always a "class act!"
