Festival Fashion 101

tote bagAll across the U.S.A. as the weather heats up, people head out of their homes to attend summer festivals, church picnics and other outdoor events that take us literally around the world in both cuisine and culture. There are motorcycle rallies, ethnic celebrations, as well as state fairs and carnivals. The list goes on and on during this time of year! Being prepared is your first step to summer fun. You simply have to take into consideration many factors that could quickly turn your day/night out with the family into a nightmare scenario. Goodwill is a great place to search out items and gear that will help you navigate the crowds, clouds and sometimes-cold weather that occurs after the sun goes down. Let’s take a look at my festival essential checklist, and make sure you and your family use it to plan your very next outing.

Tote bags of all kinds are available at any of our Goodwill stores, so pick one that will be large enough to hold your essentials and keep it in the trunk of your car, truck or minivan. It should be able to hold a folding umbrella or two (just in case there’s a summer downpour), sunscreen, insect repellent, and a lightweight blanket that can be used for an impromptu picnic when all the tables at your favorite park are in use. This bag could also come in handy to stash a shawl, or lightweight windbreaker to help ward off the chill of a summer night after dark.

shorts.fwWhat should you wear you ask? I say go for stylish basics that every family member should have. Such as a pair of walking or cargo shorts that are comfortable, but also provide pockets to stash your stuff in - such as wallets, keys, lip balm, etc. Carrying a purse or backpack isn’t always the best idea at crowded festivals, so definitely keep utility in mind!

shirts.fwLayering a lightweight cotton shirt over a simple tank top or t-shirt is a great way to protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun, and if you’re too warm they may be easily tied around your waist.

NEVER wear flip flops to a festival. I know so many people do, but your feet should be protected from being stepped on in the crowd, and in addition, they don’t provide proper support in any shoeway shape or form. And, let’s not get into the exposure your feet will have to all kinds of unsanitary things on the ground at these types of events! Better to opt for a closed shoe, such as a canvas espadrille, tennis shoe or other lightweight, but summery footwear. Always keep this in mind if you’ll be doing a lot of walking.

hatHats of all kinds are always a good bet during the summer months. Not only do they provide sun protection for your face, but also the right ones can look downright stylish! Look for preppy style baseball caps with team logos, or fedora styles for the guys, and fun lightweight straw picture hats or menswear inspired designs for the ladies!

Sunglasses are of great importance for outdoor partying during the day.  Have fun finding some that have a sunglassesvintage style vibe. Such as round or Ray-Ban styles that keep your peepers shaded in style, and add some fashion punch to your ensemble.

If you have small children, you may also want to shop for some extra t-shirts to take along in your tote bag, especially if you’ll be spending the entire day at a park or festival. Planning like this can allow little ones to partake in whatever messy food they like (deep fried chocolate bars anyone?) without worry about soiling their clothing.

Goodwill can help save you money on the things that your family needs to enjoy a happy summer season, and by purchasing items from your local store you can celebrate so much more than just the fun and frolic this time of year brings. You can be one of the heroes that support our mission to provide job training and more in your area!
