Man Up for Summer 2013

Posted by Jamie Klinger-Krebs on Jun 12, 2013 11:56:00 AM

blue striped shirtI thought this might be a good time to address the needs of stylish guys this summer, or perhaps those in need of a fashion intervention. Unlike women’s fashion, which can run the gamut of looks from demure to sexy, menswear hasn’t changed all that much over the years. There hasn’t been much adjustment since the late 1960’s or early 1970’s when men started opening up to the influence of the hippie and mod movements that had an effect on the clothing worn for work and play.  At that time longer hair became a symbol of both a change in fashion and a nod to the rock stars that helped pave the way for the loosening of the tie and shirt standard that was the accepted look in male attire. Now men have choices in the cut of their jeans, and the fit in their shirts and jackets. But, along the way there are still items of clothing that every man should have in his dresser drawers and closet for the summer months. Those are the pieces that we’ll count down this week.

pants together.fwLight colored slacks, jeans, or shorts are always a good basic item that signifies sunny days and strolls on the beach, boardwalk, or city streets. Every guy should have at least one pair of khaki slacks in lightweight cotton. If he wants to step it up just a little more, he might opt for some white sailcloth trousers, loosely fitted drawstring pants, or even a pair of white denim jeans. These pieces always look appropriate for leisure and casual Fridays at the office.

plaid shirtStriped t-shirts, button downs and polo shirts always add a nautical and sporty touch to a guy’s wardrobe. Classic blue and white are always the way to go for the more timid, but bright and bold stripes of all kinds have been seen on the menswear runways for the last few years for those men that really want to make a summer-style statement.

Plaids for both shirts and shorts are always a good bet for a guy to pair with a plain t-shirt or tank top to look a little sharper on his summer social outings. The crisp quality of plaid keeps the more colorful designs that we see for this season in the masculine realm. Classic camp shirts in cotton plaid always look good over a tank top and can be a great piece to transition from beach to town in a moment.

deck shoesCanvas deck shoes have undergone a radical transformation since the days that President Kennedy was photographed wearing his navy and white lace ups while sailing with his wife in the waters off Maine. While those types are still a valid choice, you should also look into patterned slip-ons, as well as bright and colorful twists on this menswear staple.

sunglassesRay Ban-style glasses have taken the place of the aviator this season as the eye protection selection for the male fashion follower.  Whether large or small scale they have just the right vintage vibe to look stylish but not foolish.

If your man doesn’t have any of the items I’ve mentioned above, it might be time to take him on a little shopping excursion to Goodwill. I know it can be tough for a guy to try new-fangled things, but you’ll be happy to know that our stores are a grand way to gently prod the sartorially-challenged man in a fresh direction. The added bonus is that he can step up his look without stepping on his family’s summer-fun budget!
