Nerdy but Nice

nerd girl1The classic characterization of a nerd is a person who is overly intellectual and obsessed with unpopular, non-mainstream activities. This fictional nerd also has the distinction of being thought of as shy, peculiar and unattractive.  Even though this label can be looked at as a derogatory term, the powers that be in the fashion design world have reclaimed this insulting and belittling moniker.  They have recently promoted the look and redefined it as a stylish and coveted trend for ultra-hipsters and regular people alike.  Am I saying that your awkward science teacher with the thick coke bottle glasses and pocket protector was cool?  Not really, but certain fundamentals of this brainy look can be easily translated to fit into your daily wardrobe scheme and put you squarely on the high fashion honor roll, so to speak. Let’s dissertate…

Since geek chic is going to stay in the news for quite a few semesters, start your shopping list, and keep your eyes open for the following items at the Goodwill Store & Donation Center near you.

nerd lookPrim and proper are the watchwords for the modern “nerdette”. Collared blouses with button fronts will help maintain that slightly schoolgirl feeling and are so on trend for achieving this look.  Layering on a pullover sweater, cardigan, or v-neck that will take you the head of the math and science club for sure!

Pleated skirts that sit high on the waistline and rise well above the knee are a good style-study partner with your blouse and sweater. They can be softly flowing fabric like silk or poly blends, or more sturdy textiles like wool, cotton or denim.  The key is that they are more sweet than sexy.

nerd stylePretty petite floral print fabrics of all kinds will work for these wardrobe pieces, as long as they have the requisite “grandma” vibe. This could mean wearing a buttoned-up floral dress under your sweater, wool blazer or denim jacket.

glasses.fwAccessories are also an integral part of this fashion equation.  First in your crib notes are the indispensable oversized eyeglasses!  Whether they are real or faux doesn’t matter. They can make the bookworm look succeed for anyone, and give you a sense of style authority.  Although, I would not recommend any spectacles that are held together with tape! This isn’t a costume, so the glasses should actually flatter your facial shape.

Clunky Mary Janes, monk strap platforms, menswear inspired oxfords, or even punk combat boots are a great choice for footwear. I have also spied girls wearing cowboy boots with this kind of get up.  Knee socks aren’t required, but do look great, and help keep the quirky quotient in check. The heavier style of the shoes will help balance the look and promote the cool “smarty pants” approach you’re going for here.

bags.fwBriefcase style bags will look so much better than a standard back pack or purse, and provide ample space for your day to day go to items.  Even if you aren’t in school, the structured carryalls provide some grounding for the rest of the more feminine basics of this attire.

As always, Goodwill Retail Stores & Donation Centers in your area are the first place to look when trying on any trend.  Not only is it smart fashion thinking budget-wise, but your support of programs that are vital to your community can help you achieve civic-minded extra credits as well!
