Winter 2014/2015 Home Trends

Don’t let the chill of winter keep your home décor from standing out! This is the time of year we want to have our home looking presentable for holiday guests, but the hustle and bustle of this busy season means it has to be livable too. This season’s trends are all about simplicity; trends that are simple to pull off, and trends that add a beautiful effortlessness to your home décor. This winter, be sure to deck your halls with tartan, marsala tones, nature and straightforward style!

TartanTartan

Why it made the list: Otherwise known as plaid, tartan is a quintessential pattern associated with the holidays and wintertime. We love that it seems to perfectly combine a rustic, casual look with sophisticated style. That’s not always an easy look to achieve in home décor, but tartan pulls it off!

Pull it off: This season, try out a modern take on tartan, by using it in unexpected places. We love the look of tartan on the wall; through fabric in picture frames, hanging plates, or even curtains. Tartan can also be easily incorporated onto pillows and throw blankets. Be sure to stick to lighter shades of tartan, such as blues, whites and browns; this helps the traditional pattern look updated and fresh.

MarsalaMarsala Tones

Why they made the list: It’s Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2015, so how could we possibly not incorporate it into our home? The ruby-like, almost jeweled hue of marsala is beautifully earthy, rich and is truly enticing when shown throughout the home.

Pull it off: Our favorite way to incorporate marsala into home décor is through accent pieces. It’s not only a quick, easy way to add the trend, but is also less intimidating than painting an entire wall such a deep hue. Look to Goodwill for pillows, decorative platters, vases and picture frames in this decadent color!

NatureNature

Why it made the list: Many of us don’t often think of winter as the time to really appreciate nature; fall typically takes all of the credit for that here in the Midwest. This time around, nature is stepping forward as a unique trend in home décor. It’s rustic, almost free (just head to your backyard for supplies!) and so simple to pull off. What’s not to love?

Pull it off: Nature during the wintertime takes on a simple, understated elegance. The key is to bring that same feeling into your home. Start with pine cones; our favorite wintertime nature accessory. Stack pine cones into a tall clear glass vase (look to Goodwill for your vase). To add a special touch, spray paint your pine cones gold or silver. Thin birch branches laid across a table, as a centerpiece, is also an understated and chic way to incorporate nature into your home. Other great nature items to look for include evergreen braches and small berries.

straightforward styleStraightforward Style

Why it made the list: This trend is crisp and fresh, just like winter’s air. We love the directness of this trend too; it’s uncomplicated and… simple! One of the best aspects about straightforward style is that it easily works with your home’s current style, so you don’t have to feel like you’re completely changing out the look of your home. You can add as many bits and pieces of this trend as you’re comfortable with.

Pull it off: Some of the key aspects of straightforward style are straight lines and simple color pairings. We recommend sticking to neutral tones, as they’re the easiest to work with. You can take on this trend in as many rooms of your home as you choose, but we like to start with the bedroom. After all, straightforward style is relaxing, and what better place to relax than the bedroom? Try accessorizing your bed with a crisp white comforter, and adding striped pillow cases.
