Summer 2014 Home Trends

We love the freshness of summer home decor; its vibrancy is exactly what your home craves after a rainy spring. One of our favorite things about this season’s trends is that they each encompass a very different style. This means that while each style gets to take a stand, you can pick which look fits you best, and run with it! The heat has turned up outside, now turn it up inside with textures, hot pink, the tropical vibe, retro design and wood.

texturesTextures

Why it made the list: Textures as a trend can be translated in so many different ways; you really can’t go wrong! Texture is, ironically, a simple way to add complexity to a space. By adding in a few key elements, your whole space can instantly turn dynamic and modern.

Pull it off: One of the best aspects about this trend is that is can be done by making a few simple swaps! Start by swapping out your living room rug, for a lightly colored one with a bit of texture. Now you’ve turned a regular rug into one of the room’s focal points! Check your local Goodwill for a new-to-you rug. Wall art is a great way to add texture to your walls. Look for unique 3D wall art, or textured canvas prints to pull this off.

hot pinkHot Pink

Why it made the list: We were caught off guard by this flashy hue too, but there’s no denying the popularity of hot pink this season. While you will find hot pink décor in a variety of tones, it always seems to add the perfect amount of ‘pow,’ to any space, without being too loud.

Pull it off: Hot pink works best when done in accent pieces. Whether it be an accent wall, or a simple rug, a little bit goes along way with this color. Our favorite shade of hot pink is fuchsia. It’s a tad less “neon” than hot pink, but is still perfectly bold! Start small by adding a fuchsia throw to a bedroom, or pillows to your living room. The rest of the colors in your space should be subtle. Gray, white and black work best, as they’ll allow the hot pink hue to shine through!

tropical vibeTropical Vibe

Why it made the list: We may have been dreaming of a summer vacation with this trend, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing, right? Designers are taking to warmer climates this season by using fabrics, colors and patterns that evoke a tropical vibe! We love that the 2014 version of this look incorporates natural elements in a sleek and styled way. You can add a little tropical, or a lot, which is great for making the look your own!

Pull it off: The key is to keep the space breezy and colorful, but not corny. Start with one or two large indoor plants (depending on the size of the room), then begin adding pops of large floral patterns. Accent pillows, rugs, and wall art are perfect for adding in those florals! Wicker material is also a great way to get that laid back, breezy vibe. Head to your local Goodwill, and look for a wicker end table. It will add just the perfect finishing touch to your space.

retro designRetro Design

Why it made the list: Sometimes the best way to update your décor is to give it a blast from the past! This season, pops of retro are showing up in all sorts of spaces; from kitchen floors and lighting, to the shape of furniture.  We love the crisp, funky feel of this look. Goodwill always has a great selection of vintage pieces too, so this trend is right at your fingertips!

Pull it off:  Start by adding a few key pieces, which will be the focal point(s) to your space. For a living room, add an egg chair to your already existing furniture. These can easily be incorporated next to most furniture pieces. In the kitchen, start by swapping your existing bar stools with red leather and metal ones. This look is reminiscent of a diner, and a really fun way to pull off this trend! The key? Have fun and don’t over think it. Small retro details will always be better than overwhelming the whole space with too many.

woodWood

Why it made the list: Wood, besides looking breathtaking, is another way to add texture to your space. Designers are going au natural with their décor this season by presenting natural wood walls, wooden accent décor and more! We love that wood adds warmth and charm to a room, but still keeps the décor feeling fresh.

Pull it off: Because the look of wood is naturally neutral, it goes great with all colors. Don’t worry about changing up your existing color scheme to incorporate wood. The beauty of this trend is that is works its way into the space all on its own! If you want to really highlight wood in your home, you can easily find a tutorial for creating an entire wood accent wall. This is breathtaking! We also love the look of reclaimed wood being used as wall décor. Head to your local Goodwill for a small piece of furniture that you can re-purpose the wood from. These pieces look great in a living room or entry way!
