Spring 2014 Home Trends

We know it’s still a little cold out, but go ahead and turn the heat down, open your windows and let the crisp spring breeze in! Even if it’s a little chilly out, it still feels good to let that fresh air in doesn’t it? Whether or not the weather evokes spring, there’s no reason your home shouldn’t. We’re replacing the dark home décor hues of winter with bright spring colors, and fresh fabrics throughout your home. We’ll help you get started with spring’s hottest home décor trends: Radiant Orchid, displayed quotes, tweed, understated gray and baskets.

Radiant Orchid Radiant orchid

Why it made the list
Radiant Orchid is Pantone’s 2014 Color of the Year! Need we say more? This beautiful purple hue is great for versatility in decorating. It goes great as a wall color, but also works well in small accessories. There’s no better time to bring out this enchanting hue in your home, than spring!

Pull it Off
Our favorite way to use Radiant Orchid is to really show it off! Paint an accent wall in your bedroom, office or even your kitchen. Radiant Orchid pairs well with a variety of other colors, so have some fun with mixing and matching your decorations. If you’re in the kitchen, keep the colors lively with hues of orange and fuchsia. In the bedroom, you’ll want to bring in a serene, relaxing mood by pairing your Radiant Orchid with soft lavender and cream tones.

Framed QuotesDisplayed Quotes

Why it made the list
We love the daily dose of inspiration, motivation and overall happiness that displayed quotes bring to the home! This season, you’ll see an abundance of quotes that have been artistically framed, made into wall decals, or have even been creatively woven into artwork. From quick doses of wisdom, to funny mantras to live by, displayed quotes truly add personality to any space.

Pull it Off
As long as you find it inspiring or it brightens your day, you can’t go wrong when selecting a quote for your space. Our favorite way to see quotes displayed is in a frame. It adds a sophisticated touch to a blank wall, especially when done as a collage. For a modern display, use black and white hues for your quotes and their frames. This look goes great in an office or entryway. If you’re looking to spread some bright cheer with your messages, print your favorite quotes on colorful paper. This design is especially fun in a children’s room!

Tweed Tweed

Why it made the list
Tweed, as a fabric, is both lightweight and durable. This is a great combination for spring décor; you want something that looks effortless, but it needs to be sturdy and resilient enough to withstand everyday use in the home. Luckily, tweed has taken over the home accessories world and designers are finding fun ways to use it. Tweed goes great with a lot of other fabrics, so you won’t feel like you need to fully change-out your preexisting décor in order to incorporate this trend.

Pull it Off
We love the look of neutral tweed fabric. The muted hues really work their way into home décor. Look for neutral tweed done on accent pieces; pillows, lamp shades, picture frames, etc. Tweed pillows give a great rustic feel to a dark leather couch; this is one of our favorite ways to use it. If you want a softer take on the fabric, look for tweed décor in soft pastels. These light tweed shades look great as textured wallpaper, or in large area rugs.

Understated GrayUnderstated Gray

Why it made the list
The saying of the season seems to be, “gray is the new beige.” And it really is! This spring, soft gray is taking on a wide variety of décor pieces. We love this understated color, because it pairs beautifully with other colors, especially Radiant Orchid!

Pull it Off
Accentuate the beautiful tones in soft gray by pairing it with Radiant Orchid or lime green. This pop of color creates a modern sophisticated look. Look for soft gray done on larger décor pieces, such as area rugs, book shelves, or even wall paint.

Bathroom BasketsBaskets

Why it made the listLiving Room Basket
Baskets serve both an organizational and a decorative purpose; the best décor combination! Goodwill always has an abundance of baskets, making this trend one of the easiest to pull off. They’re available in every shape, size and color too, giving you endless organization possibilities!

Pull it Off
Be sure to use baskets to their full organizational potential! In a bathroom, baskets work wonderfully hung on curtain rods for storing towels and soaps. They can also be placed under the sink to do some “behind-the-scenes” organizing of beauty products and other bathroom essentials! In the living room, small baskets can easily be placed on bookshelves for storing those less than glamorous items; remote controls, magazines, etc. Large baskets can be placed next to the couch to store blankets! Their woven texture makes baskets really easy to paint, so be sure to spray paint your basket so that it compliments your preexisting décor (use indoor safe spray paint).
