Spooky season is upon us and that means it’s time to start planning the perfect Halloween costume. What better place to find an affordable, customized Halloween look than Goodwill?! This year I decided to go as a classic - Wednesday Addams. I was able to thrift my ENTIRE look and you can too if you follow my top THREE tips to costume thrifting!
Go in with a plan, but plan on changing it.
Yes, I know that sounds counterintuitive but trust me! Go into your thrifting trip with an idea of what you want to get, have the basics planned out, but do keep it vague because you will rarely find the EXACT thing you are looking for! However, with a little creativity, you should be able to find something close and can adjust from there!
For my look, I knew I needed a black dress with a white collar, Mary Jane shoes, and a creepy doll. Did I find any of that exactly? No, but I was able to find other fun pieces that made the costume work.
Do not pay attention to sizing.
Since this is a costume, you will only be wearing it for a short while, so it’s fine if it’s not the perfect size. If it’s too big, then add a belt or a sash. If it’s a shirt that is too small in the arms, cut the arms off and wear it under a jacket. Don’t be afraid to add your own style and flair when putting together your costume.
Shop the entire store:
Just like tip two, you shouldn’t limit your shopping to one specific department. I didn’t find a black dress WITH a white collar, but I was able to find a black dress from the women’s section and a white button-up from the men’s section. Even though I didn’t find a creepy doll, I did find a skull in seasonal!
And that’s it! Enjoy your next Halloween thrifting adventure. To get started on your Halloween look, visit your local Goodwill Store & Donation Center today!
