Upcycling Expert - Annie Temmink

Annie Temmink

Annie completed her BA in sculpture and math from Davidson College in North Carolina, and received a Thomas J Watson Foundation Fellowship to travel independently for twelve months studying fashion and textiles.  From Indonesia to Japan, India to Uganda and Tanzania, she worked with village women, dove through sprawling second-hand markets and explored fashion in the world’s biggest cities and smallest towns.  The scope of her studies took her from preparing plants for organic dyes to exploring the factories that produce clothing for brand name stores.

Much of Annie’s inspiration comes from common or unwanted materials whose wide availability sparked her interest in recycling materials six years ago. Now she transforms repurposed clothing into sculpture for solo exhibitions and larger installations. Her work catches attention including that of trend forecasting companies in New York and private collectors on the east coast. Annie looks forward to blogging about her experiences and showing you how to create fabulous projects (clothing, jewelry and beyond) with materials from Goodwill.

Annie currently designs and makes clothing and accessories (and dances like-a-fool) in Charlottesville, Virginia. To learn more and to see Annie's projects visit: www.artemmink.com

Halloween costume varietiesYou don’t have to be anything for Halloween this year!

If you’re fixating on what to be for Halloween, remember that a great costume doesn’t require you to be anything.

There are many ways to shock, awe, delight and appall your friends without trying to look like something you’ve seen before.

Halloween costume varietiesOne good solution: Wear normal clothes in unusual ways. Wear all of your clothes at once.  Wear shirts as pants and pants as shirts. Put two or more people into one giant shirt. All are great options to look more curious than you normally do.  (If you feel compelled, you can also print out a cardboard face of someone famous and have that as a fallback.)

You can go overboard with an unusual color.  Wear all hot pink or teal or yellow, in many layers. Have friends do the same and you can be a rainbow, or the visible color spectrum (nerdy costume explanations are always a hit).

You can accessorize with weirdly shaped hats. Or, wear many hats and be a hat rack. You will find a large selection of them at Goodwill and it’s a great option for those who need work-appropriate costumes.

You can wear special-occasion clothing (wedding dress and powder-blue tuxedo) for the wrong occasion (Halloween) and accessorize with hats or masks:

Halloween costume varietiesYou could also wear wigs, and capes, and all of the accessories you can find at Goodwill to make yourself look more eccentric and mysterious than you normally do. Goodwill stocks a variety of wigs, hats, and make-up in their stores just for Halloween!

Regardless of what you wear, or end up looking like, Here are some of the many benefits of buying your costume at Goodwill:

  1. Originality: Putting together a costume from Goodwill takes a little bit of free-spirited fun that your friends will love.
  2. Wearability and Sustainability: Your Goodwill clothes can be easily repurposed into something wearable outside of Halloween.
  3. Mission Driven: Your purchases support local job growth and training in your community.
  4. Cost Effective. Goodwill makes it affordable to find oddities you won’t find elsewhere. With prices starting at $1 you can buy a unique costume and still have money for the weekend!

So get inspired and shop Goodwill first! Happy Halloween.
