Upcycling Expert - Annie Temmink

Annie Temmink

Annie completed her BA in sculpture and math from Davidson College in North Carolina, and received a Thomas J Watson Foundation Fellowship to travel independently for twelve months studying fashion and textiles.  From Indonesia to Japan, India to Uganda and Tanzania, she worked with village women, dove through sprawling second-hand markets and explored fashion in the world’s biggest cities and smallest towns.  The scope of her studies took her from preparing plants for organic dyes to exploring the factories that produce clothing for brand name stores.

Much of Annie’s inspiration comes from common or unwanted materials whose wide availability sparked her interest in recycling materials six years ago. Now she transforms repurposed clothing into sculpture for solo exhibitions and larger installations. Her work catches attention including that of trend forecasting companies in New York and private collectors on the east coast. Annie looks forward to blogging about her experiences and showing you how to create fabulous projects (clothing, jewelry and beyond) with materials from Goodwill.

Annie currently designs and makes clothing and accessories (and dances like-a-fool) in Charlottesville, Virginia. To learn more and to see Annie's projects visit: www.artemmink.com

Crazy Sweaters for Christmas

sweatersnowflake1Now is the time to get in the spirit with weird holiday sweaters, so shop Goodwill and try this project! You’ll outdo your friends and it’s easy to disassemble if, after the holidays, you just want the plain sweater. Re-donate the adornment along with your other holiday items!

You will need:

- A comfy sweater from Goodwill

-A plush toy from Goodwill

-A big needle and yarn or safety pins

sweater doll combo.fwI found a beautiful, handmade doll last week and thought it would be an unexpected, and fun addition to an oversized winter sweater.  I find when you are cold and miserable anyway you improve your mood (and the mood of the people around you) by adding curious pieces to your wardrobe. Be extra playful.

sweater threadingIf you don’t find a doll like this one, you will certainly find another interesting plush toy.  I look for ones with bright colors and details. You could also sew or safety pin on an assortment of plush toys to go for the Noah’s Ark look.  Do both!

Just thread your needle with strong yarn and run a stich around the outside of the plush toy.  For easier removal use a number of safety pins. If your toy is heavy, you might need to reinforce the sweater.  Use a non-stretch ribbon and sew one end to the shoulder seam and the other to your object (on the inside of the sweater) so that the sweater won’t stretch under the weight of your toy.  Then enjoy with your friends! Make sure to check out Goodwill this season while shopping for presents - you never know what you might find. Before you shop, donate any unwanted items to help make room in your closets and new jobs for others in your community.
