Annie Temmink

Annie completed her BA in sculpture and math from Davidson College in North Carolina, and received a Thomas J Watson Foundation Fellowship to travel independently for twelve months studying fashion and textiles.  From Indonesia to Japan, India to Uganda and Tanzania, she worked with village women, dove through sprawling second-hand markets and explored fashion in the world’s biggest cities and smallest towns.  The scope of her studies took her from preparing plants for organic dyes to exploring the factories that produce clothing for brand name stores.

Much of Annie’s inspiration comes from common or unwanted materials whose wide availability sparked her interest in recycling materials six years ago. Now she transforms repurposed clothing into sculpture for solo exhibitions and larger installations. Her work catches attention including that of trend forecasting companies in New York and private collectors on the east coast. Annie looks forward to blogging about her experiences and showing you how to create fabulous projects (clothing, jewelry and beyond) with materials from Goodwill.

Annie currently designs and makes clothing and accessories (and dances like-a-fool) in Charlottesville, Virginia. To learn more and to see Annie's projects visit: www.artemmink.com

Father’s Day with the Brewers

Posted by Jamie Klinger-Krebs on Jun 5, 2013 2:48:00 PM

shirtWhat kind of dad do you have?

Athletic?

Academic?

Culinary?

Adventurous?

You could buy your dad a tie (and Goodwill’s got lots of them) but instead of buying something for next-to-nothing that he will likely never use, find something you can both enjoy together.

Why not get baseball tickets to the next Brewers game and make an upcylced baseball jersey to support your team.

For the jersey you need two shirts from Goodwill, both the same size (in your team colors).  (It would be really perfect if you found a Brewers t-shirt, but they didn’t have them at my Goodwill so I used a plain white T.)

father's day

  1. Lay the white shirt on top of the navy shirt and cut off the sleeves on a diagonal line from underarm to collar.
  2. I cut off the excess fabric at the bottom of the navy shirt and pinned the white shirt on top (fold the edges of the white shirt under to give it a cleaner look). Top stich the shirts together.
  3. Now flip inside out and cut out the extra navy fabric near the seams.
  4. Done! For the logo you could either use an iron-on transfer or hand draw it in Sharpie® (the transfer will look more professional, but the Sharpie® could be neat too if you take your time with it.)

father's dayYou might also check out what kind of sporting equipment Goodwill has in stock and go play sports together at your local gym.

If your dad isn’t the most athletic, try one of these ideas instead:

  • If he likes to relax in his time off, pick up a couple of books from Goodwill and spend the day reading in a hammock together.
  • If he likes to cook pick up a few grill tools and cook lunch with your dad.
  • If he’s a woodworker, find a piece of furniture at Goodwill that you can restore together. Get all of your materials and set up your workspace so that you can start you project Father’s Day morning.
  • If the weather’s nice, go for a hike together. Find a backpack at Goodwill that you can fill with lunch and drinks.
  • If your dad’s a gardener make him a planter out of the pots you find at Goodwill and spend the day planting and picking out plants together.

Whoever your dad is, whatever he likes to do, spend some time with him this Father’s Day.
