Tailgating is a tradition from late spring until the end of the football season. It’s fun to meet friends before the game to eat and drink. I’ve seen tailgate parties as simple as a couple of hot dogs tossed on a disposable grill to an elegant event with a linen tablecloth and crystal wine glasses. Most of us picnic somewhere in between.
My party philosophy is to do as much ahead of time as possible. A little planning will keep you in the pre-game fun.
Everyone needs a seat. Don’t pass up old folding chairs just because they’ve seen better days. As long as they are sturdy, a blanket covers up wear and tear (plus you have an extra throw for chilly nights).
Preparing food at home instead of grilling out is less messy and easier. I like to make box lunches for everyone. Sandwich, pickle, side dishes all in one take-out container. I tucked a napkin under the lid and tied on utensils with twist ties. No muss, no fuss and no clean-up!
I found baseball key chains at Goodwill. Write the date or event on the tab and everyone goes home with a memento.
Be sure to pack plenty of ice to keep drinks and food cold. Supply a permanent marker so everyone can keep track of their own drink cup.
Bring extra blankets, quilts and pillows to relax and get comfortable before and after the game. Just because you’re outdoors is no reason to skimp on comfort and style!
A variety of chairs, tables, blankets, pillows are available at Goodwill.
