Denim Update

Posted by Jamie Klinger-Krebs on Jan 25, 2012 4:05:00 PM

Let’s face it; denim never goes out of style. Sometimes, however, the fit and cut may be in question. Thankfully, designers have taken us away from the low-rise look that was with us for far too long. Today’s realm includes the higher waist and fitted look from the ‘70s, albeit without those elephant bell-bottoms! Another denim classic sneaking its way back onto every “hot” list is the denim blazer. More like a suit than a jacket, the denim blazer is a fresh take on both denim and menswear. So, visit your nearest Goodwill Store & Donation Center and check the jacket racks to strike “blue,” rather than gold!denim fashin trends

With the right combination, the versatile denim blazer is perfect to wear from early spring into summer. Try wearing it with a simple t-shirt and some loose fitting, non-denim slacks for more of a menswear look. Another simple look is the fitted denim blazer worn over a romantic, soft dress. If that’s “too girly” for you go with a blouse and skirt to add a more rugged element. Just remember, never go head-to-toe denim. You’ll get much more use out of denim pieces as separates!

Fit of course, is the foremost concern when finding an outfit of any kind. No matter what the price, it must both fit and flatter your body. Follow these rules to ensure a good fit:

  • When you put a coat or jacket on, look at the shoulder area. The shoulder line should end at the edge of your shoulders, not before or after.
  • Make sure you can easily move your arms around and reach for things at eye level.amazing goodwill fashion tips
  • Button the jacket and see where the “V” it forms hits your chest area. You want it to fit, but not pull on the buttons!
  • Lastly, where does the hem of the jacket stop? Is it a cropped jacket that ends at the waist or one that is a longer hip-length? Where the hem hits your body makes a big difference in the jacket’s ability to be versatile with other pieces in your wardrobe.

The various finishes that are trendy on denim this year make them wearable for anyone’s personal style. Some of my favorite finishes include distressed and painted-over denim. The great thing about this sturdy fabric is that you can take a plain blazer and make it your own. I have used sand paper, bleach washes, splatter painting (ala artist Jackson Pollack) and other techniques to tweak and personalize a few denim pieces that I own myself.

A couple of years ago I bought a denim blazer from Goodwill that was fitted like a suit coat. It had the perfect fit for me and I can work it into any outfit, so it will last for years! Now it’s your turn! Head over to the nearest Goodwill Store & Donation Center to create your own “fresh from the runway” denim blazer look today!goodwill fashion expert bjorn nasett
