Back To School Trends for 2013

Back To School TrendsDenim - Skinny jeans are still in!  Destroyed and distressed jeans are in.  Denim shirts, dresses, and jackets will also top the lists.

Backpacks, school bagsand messenger bags get a colorful makeover with prints, checked patterns, and multi color blocked looks.

Jackets take a turn to the vintage as in the 80’s. Look for puffy sleeved treatments, and cropped shrunken jackets for girls, and motorcycle inspired for the guys.

Knit watch caps and beanies are on the horizon as a fashion statement again after a lull. The look is early 90’s Nirvana…

Colorful is putting it mildly when it comes to color this fall for back to school. Neon leads the way in absolutely everything from an accent here and there to full on neon color denim jeans, jackets, tops, and accessories.  Other major players on the color spectrum are tangerine (soft orange), good old hot pink, teal greens, and rose-grey tones.

Ballet flats make a romantic comeback for the ladies along with other “girly” accessories like flowered headbands, necklaces, and bracelets.

Guys go for prints, patterns and color too!  Classic Argyle, hound’s-tooth, and wide horizontal striped shirts and sweaters are the way to spiff up those new jeans and tennis shoes (Chuck Taylor’s, and other classic gym shoes will be all the rage).

Layering it all together is still prevalent, not only as a fashion look, but as a way to get more bang for the back to school buck. The use of classic accessories like hats, vests, scarves, and belts will transform classic button down shirts for boys and girls alike.

Western wear, while not as popular as other trends will slowly make it back with contrast-yoked shirts with snap front closures in plaid and solid colors. The trick is to make them more urban with a necktie or other accessory that plays down the “hoe down” look a little bit.

All access to the '80s including the aforementioned puffy sleeve treatments, but also the preppy style so popular then with polo shirts and logo sweaters topping the list. Add in some classic oxford type shoes and you’ll be in business.
