Upcycling Expert - Annie Temmink

Annie Temmink

Annie completed her BA in sculpture and math from Davidson College in North Carolina, and received a Thomas J Watson Foundation Fellowship to travel independently for twelve months studying fashion and textiles.  From Indonesia to Japan, India to Uganda and Tanzania, she worked with village women, dove through sprawling second-hand markets and explored fashion in the world’s biggest cities and smallest towns.  The scope of her studies took her from preparing plants for organic dyes to exploring the factories that produce clothing for brand name stores.

Much of Annie’s inspiration comes from common or unwanted materials whose wide availability sparked her interest in recycling materials six years ago. Now she transforms repurposed clothing into sculpture for solo exhibitions and larger installations. Her work catches attention including that of trend forecasting companies in New York and private collectors on the east coast. Annie looks forward to blogging about her experiences and showing you how to create fabulous projects (clothing, jewelry and beyond) with materials from Goodwill.

Annie currently designs and makes clothing and accessories (and dances like-a-fool) in Charlottesville, Virginia. To learn more and to see Annie's projects visit: www.artemmink.com

Fast and Easy Animal Ears, Fancy Hair Clips, and Hat Dazzle

Posted by Jamie Klinger-Krebs on Oct 16, 2014 2:55:00 PM

Halloween accessoriesThis project was inspired by a local clown, mime, and friend, Ruckus.  Looking for a quick and easy way to spice up your Halloween costume? This project can be taken in any direction and the possibilities are endless.

You will need:

-Fun hats from Goodwill

-Hairclips

-Feathers, fur beads or other fun accents from Goodwill

-Glue and wire to attach

Halloween accessoriesStep 1:

Start with hairclips. Use larger ones for big fluff and little ones for small accents.

Halloween accessoriesStep 2:

Cut out your animal ears. Use something like leather or vinyl that will hold its shape and won’t fray at the edges. Here’s the basic shape. Note the cut slit, this will help form the ear shape in step 3.

Step 3:

Insert one flap of the ear between the clips. Put a dab of glue over the clip on the back side of the ear and fold for that 3D effect.

Halloween accessoriesDecorate them with buttons, fur, flowers, feathers you name it!

The best part is you can clip nearly anything to your head! Artfully arrange some stuff… buttons, puzzle pieces, old toys, found objects… the sky is the limit! Have some fun and win that prize in the Halloween contest.

Helpful hint for non-eared art, use a piece of felt between the pieces of the clip (like we did with the ear flap in step 3). This will give you a larger and more stable surface to attach your clips… and will keep you from accidentally gluing your clip shut!

Have a Happy Halloween from Goodwill!
