Upcycling Expert - Annie Temmink

Annie Temmink

Annie completed her BA in sculpture and math from Davidson College in North Carolina, and received a Thomas J Watson Foundation Fellowship to travel independently for twelve months studying fashion and textiles.  From Indonesia to Japan, India to Uganda and Tanzania, she worked with village women, dove through sprawling second-hand markets and explored fashion in the world’s biggest cities and smallest towns.  The scope of her studies took her from preparing plants for organic dyes to exploring the factories that produce clothing for brand name stores.

Much of Annie’s inspiration comes from common or unwanted materials whose wide availability sparked her interest in recycling materials six years ago. Now she transforms repurposed clothing into sculpture for solo exhibitions and larger installations. Her work catches attention including that of trend forecasting companies in New York and private collectors on the east coast. Annie looks forward to blogging about her experiences and showing you how to create fabulous projects (clothing, jewelry and beyond) with materials from Goodwill.

Annie currently designs and makes clothing and accessories (and dances like-a-fool) in Charlottesville, Virginia. To learn more and to see Annie's projects visit: www.artemmink.com

Gear up for back to schoolThe new school year brings great sports along with it. From junior high touch football, to high school volleyball, and collegiate intermural and novelty club sports, there’s a little something for everyone. The variety of college athletics, for example, can span anywhere from Quidditch to lawn bowling and medieval longsword sparing (this is a real sport!). Of course, you’ll also have the usual soccer, basketball and tennis too, but best of all, you can try several sports before settling on your favorite. But, that’s a lot to train for, and it can also be costly when you consider the cost of the equipment you might need for some of these sports. But, that’s where Goodwill comes in!

Gear up for back to schoolGear up for back to schoolI’ve found a lot of great sports gear at Goodwill, some I’ve used for myself, and some I’ve even given as gifts.  Many people don’t realize just how much Goodwill has to offer. So, here’s a short list of sporting goods you’re likely to find at your local Goodwill store:

Gear up for back to schoolBikes, helmets, rollerblades, basketballs, volleyballs, baseballs, footballs, whiffle balls, soccer balls, baseball mitts, baseball bats, hula hoops, weights and dumbbells, jump ropes, skateboards, tennis shoes, sweat suits, t-shirts and sports jackets, athletic bags, Frisbees, dance wear, snow shoes, wet suits, ski gear, and ice skates … just to name a few.

Gear up for back to schoolWhat’s your favorite local sports team? You’re also likely to find the gear and apparel for your team, too. This makes it easy to outfit for a big game and show your team support.

If you purchase equipment that you decide later on you no longer want, donate it to Goodwill and let someone else play and join in the fun!

Your purchases and donations help Goodwill train and employ many of the great people in your community. Goodwill helps those with disabilities, who may otherwise struggle to find employment, find rewarding work. So, it’s easy to see why you should shop Goodwill for your sports gear. And, with such low prices you’re likely find a few extra things for your dorm room, too.

With all of this good news, expect the first few weeks of back-to-school to be better than ever, and shop Goodwill for all of your back-to-school sports!
