Upcycling Expert - Annie Temmink

Annie Temmink

Annie completed her BA in sculpture and math from Davidson College in North Carolina, and received a Thomas J Watson Foundation Fellowship to travel independently for twelve months studying fashion and textiles.  From Indonesia to Japan, India to Uganda and Tanzania, she worked with village women, dove through sprawling second-hand markets and explored fashion in the world’s biggest cities and smallest towns.  The scope of her studies took her from preparing plants for organic dyes to exploring the factories that produce clothing for brand name stores.

Much of Annie’s inspiration comes from common or unwanted materials whose wide availability sparked her interest in recycling materials six years ago. Now she transforms repurposed clothing into sculpture for solo exhibitions and larger installations. Her work catches attention including that of trend forecasting companies in New York and private collectors on the east coast. Annie looks forward to blogging about her experiences and showing you how to create fabulous projects (clothing, jewelry and beyond) with materials from Goodwill.

Annie currently designs and makes clothing and accessories (and dances like-a-fool) in Charlottesville, Virginia. To learn more and to see Annie's projects visit: www.artemmink.com

How to Make Your Luggage Stand Out from the Crowd

Posted by Jamie Klinger-Krebs on Jul 1, 2014 1:04:00 PM

travel bagsNo matter where you might be traveling this summer, you’ll need somewhere to put your things. Goodwill has all the bags, luggage, trunks, travel bagsand totes you could ever need. Even if you find a great suitcase at Goodwill chances are it looks like all the other black suitcases out there. You’ll want your luggage to stand out so you never have to worry about lost bags again.

There are many ways to stand out.

Option 1: Tape a brightly collored object to the front of your bag.   This will achieve the goal, but may not be the most sophisticaed or practical approach. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that.)

You will need:

travel bags-Elastic band (cut to stretch around your suitcase)

-Felt or fabric cut into triangles

-Hot glue gun.

Glue the trinagles to the elastic band.  (Yep that’s it!) You could stitch the ends of the elastic band together, or just tie them securely around your bag with a knot. EASY.

You will need:

-Scrap fabric

-Scrap card stock

-Vinyl

-Elastic

-Hot glue gun

First cut out a rectangle from your vinyl with an inch of extra space on one edge. Cut out a piece of fabric to fit behind this one, plus an inch of extra length. Fold down this extra inch and sew a semi circle at the bottom.  Flip this right side out and sew down the side edges.  Sew a loop of elastic to the top, and thread this through a small hole in your vinyl piece.

Next cut a card to fit behind the vinyl (where you can write your contact information) and use a hot glue gun to glue all of the pieces together.  That’s all it takes!  Try other variations too.

With your newly customized bags you’ll be ready to hop on a bus, train, plane, or anywhere else your travels might take you.  And, don’t forget to shop Goodwill first for your travel essentials.  You’ll save money and support your community at the same time.  Happy travels, from Goodwill!
