Upcycling Expert - Annie Temmink

Annie Temmink

Annie completed her BA in sculpture and math from Davidson College in North Carolina, and received a Thomas J Watson Foundation Fellowship to travel independently for twelve months studying fashion and textiles.  From Indonesia to Japan, India to Uganda and Tanzania, she worked with village women, dove through sprawling second-hand markets and explored fashion in the world’s biggest cities and smallest towns.  The scope of her studies took her from preparing plants for organic dyes to exploring the factories that produce clothing for brand name stores.

Much of Annie’s inspiration comes from common or unwanted materials whose wide availability sparked her interest in recycling materials six years ago. Now she transforms repurposed clothing into sculpture for solo exhibitions and larger installations. Her work catches attention including that of trend forecasting companies in New York and private collectors on the east coast. Annie looks forward to blogging about her experiences and showing you how to create fabulous projects (clothing, jewelry and beyond) with materials from Goodwill.

Annie currently designs and makes clothing and accessories (and dances like-a-fool) in Charlottesville, Virginia. To learn more and to see Annie's projects visit: www.artemmink.com

Garden Party

Garden PartySpring is starting to show and Easter is on its way so why not celebrate with a garden party!  Invite friends over for tea and snacks and have a big basket of silk flowers you can all use to decorate dresses, shirts, corsets or other spring clothing.  Play music and tell stories while you work on your projects with friends. This flower corset would also be a great top for a prom dress too!

Garden PartyYou will need:

- A corset, dress, hat or other clothing from Goodwill.

- A wide variety of silk flowers from Goodwill.

- A few hot glue guns to share.

- An assortment of costume jewelry gems or glittery items to add with your flowers.

Garden PartyThis project is great fun because it’s hard to mess up. Simply take petals, leaves, or full flowers add a little hot glue and apply to your corset. Be careful not to hot glue your fingers (I think I glued mine more than the flowers and its not fun).  You could also use costume gemstones or rhinestones.

Garden PartyWhen applying flowers think about using smaller ones around your waist ones (or just use leaves and petals) so that it doesn’t get too bulky.  Also think about transitioning from one color to another and using a variety of sizes to give the top more interest.

It’s also fun to make a pin board, or have magazine photos of other floral inspired garments to give everyone inspiration.  Once you are finished, wear your outfits to dinner, or go out dancing!  Happy Spring!
