Upcycling Expert - Annie Temmink

Annie Temmink

Annie completed her BA in sculpture and math from Davidson College in North Carolina, and received a Thomas J Watson Foundation Fellowship to travel independently for twelve months studying fashion and textiles.  From Indonesia to Japan, India to Uganda and Tanzania, she worked with village women, dove through sprawling second-hand markets and explored fashion in the world’s biggest cities and smallest towns.  The scope of her studies took her from preparing plants for organic dyes to exploring the factories that produce clothing for brand name stores.

Much of Annie’s inspiration comes from common or unwanted materials whose wide availability sparked her interest in recycling materials six years ago. Now she transforms repurposed clothing into sculpture for solo exhibitions and larger installations. Her work catches attention including that of trend forecasting companies in New York and private collectors on the east coast. Annie looks forward to blogging about her experiences and showing you how to create fabulous projects (clothing, jewelry and beyond) with materials from Goodwill.

Annie currently designs and makes clothing and accessories (and dances like-a-fool) in Charlottesville, Virginia. To learn more and to see Annie's projects visit: www.artemmink.com

The New Year Checklist

New Year's checklistNew Year brings with it many joys, including the joy of thrashing glitter off of everything you own. (Is there anyone out there who wasn’t glitter bombed this New Year’s Eve?) Even if you avoided the sparkles, you’ve still got the whole year to completely change everything about yourself. Daunting as that may sound, I’m pretty sure you can do it with a little help from Goodwill.

3garmentsWhat are your New Year’s resolutions?

1. Maybe you want to clear out extra clutter?

Start by photographing anything you haven’t worn in over a year so you can make a happy collage of all of the weirdo, sentimental stuff you used to have. Then make a donation box with all of that stuff. Once you’ve cleared everything out, bring the box of goodies to Goodwill. You’ll get that warm feeling for doing something great for yourself, your community, and you’ll like the tax deduction, too.

2.  Maybe you want to look and feel better?

rollerskatingFind brightly colored sportswear at Goodwill for motivation and try joining a rec league or a roller skating team. Social exercise gives you added emotional fun that gyms often don’t.  You’ll look great no matter what you do, because Goodwill is full of hidden treasures. Plus you’ll have fun shopping with your new sports friends (and obviously look great from playing all those sports).

map3. Maybe you want to travel more.

Try planing an overnight trip. Pick a road you’ve never driven down and drive an hour or two in that direction. Stay at the first unusual local inn you find. Where ever your adventure takes you, Goodwill has the luggage and overnight supplies you’ll want with you!

4.  Maybe this is the year to focus on your diet.

Start on Goodwill’s shelves to find inspiration in a great cook book or diet book. Then spend your grocery shopping time in the produce section and drink lots of water. This combined with intense roller sports will help your physique practically sculpt itself. (Clearly you should consult a doctor before doing anything radical because I am not a health expert.)

Whatever your goals, help support others with your donations this holiday season, and spark your own imagination at Goodwill.

Happy New Year!
