Annie Temmink

Annie completed her BA in sculpture and math from Davidson College in North Carolina, and received a Thomas J Watson Foundation Fellowship to travel independently for twelve months studying fashion and textiles.  From Indonesia to Japan, India to Uganda and Tanzania, she worked with village women, dove through sprawling second-hand markets and explored fashion in the world’s biggest cities and smallest towns.  The scope of her studies took her from preparing plants for organic dyes to exploring the factories that produce clothing for brand name stores.

Much of Annie’s inspiration comes from common or unwanted materials whose wide availability sparked her interest in recycling materials six years ago. Now she transforms repurposed clothing into sculpture for solo exhibitions and larger installations. Her work catches attention including that of trend forecasting companies in New York and private collectors on the east coast. Annie looks forward to blogging about her experiences and showing you how to create fabulous projects (clothing, jewelry and beyond) with materials from Goodwill.

Annie currently designs and makes clothing and accessories (and dances like-a-fool) in Charlottesville, Virginia. To learn more and to see Annie's projects visit: www.artemmink.com

fur coatNot sure what to do this weekend?

Sometimes being a little outrageous is all you need to have a great night with your friends. Find your favorite: Fur coat, 80's snowsuit, or disproportionately large hat at Goodwill, throw it at your friends, and let the games begin.

When I go to Goodwill, I look for adventure by finding things I’ve never been brave enough to wear in public. (For me this often manifests as something furry or overzealously sequined).  I try to bring friends (it's more fun to dress them up and laugh anyway), and make a game of who can find the best piece. But, there's no reason for this kind of fun to stay within the confines of your friendly Goodwill store.

For a recent Christmas party I decided it was time to bring Goodwill to my friends.

To get things started, I wore the fur coat I bought from Goodwill during my trip to Milwaukee with a big pair of heels (guys, boots are good too, though heels would probably get you more attention) and a fierce sense of confidence. The confidence quickly turned into me feeling mildly ridiculous, but generally, I'd say I faked the confidence pretty well.

Because of everyone's magnetic attraction to the coat, pretty soon, everyone started trying it on for themselves. Lots of embarrassing photos and sillier personalities followed. The coat started great conversation (practically talked for itself) and led to plenty of bad jokes to cover the night.

So if you want: 1.) The enviable photos 2.) The best time you can have with no planning and an even smaller budget 3.) The surprise you’ll get from seeing how your friends react?  The equation you need is below:

Try it.

(It’s even better than charades.)
