Dorm-Ready Checklist

Back to school is just around the corner. If this is your first year moving into the dorms or your fourth, you want to be prepared for the big move-in day. Don’t forget anything with our easy to follow checklist. 


  • Sheets and pillow cases
  • Pillows and mattress pad
  • Comforter, bedspread or duvet cover - TIP: duvet covers allow you to change your color scheme more often
  • Blanket
  • Decorative throw pillows 


  • Towels: bath, hand, washcloths - TIP: each roommate should choose a different color
  • Shower curtain and hooks
  • Bath mat and/or rug
  • Wastebasket
  • Tissues
  • Storage basket, bins or tote for toiletries
  • Cleaning supplies in a tote


  • Hamper
  • Detergent and fabric softener
  • Iron and ironing board
  • Stain remover pen
  • Hangers


  • Lamp - TIP: mix and match shades for a personal look
  • Desk accessories for school and writing supplies
  • Bulletin board and push pins
  • Dry erase message board for door
  • Multiport power strip (don’t forget your cables)
  • Extension cord
  • Basic office supplies
  • Printer


  • Baskets, totes, bins to stay organized - TIP: don’t forget under-the-bed storage containers
  • Multiple compartment shoe organizer - TIP: use it for fashion accessories, towels, cables, book, even shoes!
  • Over-the-door organizer (take advantage of every inch of storage space)
  • Stackable bins and drawers that will fit in the closet
  • Trunk - TIP: does double duty as a table 


  • Mini fridge
  • Dishes: plates, bowls, glasses, mugs
  • Flatware and utensils
  • Travel mug
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Dish cloths and towels
  • Food storage containers
  • Paper and plastic products: towels, napkins, wrap and bags, trash bags
  • Coffee pot
  • Small appliances (be sure to check what is allowed and prohibited)


  • Art for walls - TIP: check with dorm for approved hanging system
  • Framed family photos
  • Wall decals
  • Area rug
  • Curtains and rods

Misc furniture

  • Floor pillows
  • Bedside table
  • Comfy chair
  • Bean bag chair
  • Rolling cart


  • Tool kit with pliers, screwdrivers (slotted and Phillips), wire cutter, hammer
  • Duct tape (because you never know)
  • Sewing kit with scissors
  • Flashlight and batteries
  • Light bulbs
  • Eye glass repair kit
  • Weekender overnight bag
  • First aid kit
