Because we can find everything on the internet, globes have gone the way of the dinosaur. But, they still make interesting decorative items, especially vintage ones.
They’re also perfect for parties with a travel theme.
If you’re planning a family or class reunion this summer, set a globe in the center of your table. Have each guest write their name and city where they live or came from on little pennants. Maybe the globe becomes the prize for the person who traveled the farthest.
I made the pennants from scrapbook paper, tooth picks and a glue stick. Cut squares from the paper, fold in half and cut into a triangle shape. Glue the tooth pick at the fold. I used a candle adhesive (look for it at a craft store) to hold the sticks in place. It doesn’t harden and is easy to remove.
If your family is interested in genealogy, turn your globe into a family “tree.” I cut leaves from the sticky part of Post-It notes. (No glue needed and easy to remove.) Write the cities or countries where your ancestors came from. You might have to do some research in advance, but family history is fascinating.
Maybe your party is a send-off for someone going on a great vacation. I painted the globe with chalkboard paint (it comes in colors besides black). Have lots of chalk on hand for everyone to sign it.
Or use this idea as a guest book at an anniversary party or wedding. After everyone signs it, protect their signatures with a spray finish. It’s a perfect remembrance of who attended a special day.
