Cupcakes are the hottest trend at wedding receptions these days. Brides are replacing the traditional wedding cake with single size servings in a variety of flavors.
You could invest in a special cupcake stand (and never use it again) or make your own tiered stand for a fraction of the cost, by shopping at your nearest Goodwill store. After the wedding, you can take it apart and have a variety of serving platters and dishes to use over and over again.
Depending on your theme or how formal or casual your reception will be, collect plates and bowls in glass, silver or wood. You’ll want to find a number of plates in graduated sizes.
Choose “bases” that are tall enough to allow guests to reach in to help themselves to the treats. You might have to stack more than one together to add height.
If you have tarnished pieces, a little bit of silver polish will bring back the shine. Use a water soluble glue if you want to take your tiered stand apart or permanent glue if you want it to stay intact.
A wood stand is less formal. If the parts don’t match, add color with a couple of cans of spray paint.
There are all kinds of options, like mixing and matching cut glass, pattern or clear glass. For a less formal look, add plates edged in gold or silver.
You might also choose to create a stand combining glass and silver components.
For a final, finishing touch, reserve the top tier for a traditional cake topper, a small bouquet of flowers or a larger cupcake to save for your first anniversary!
