Make Your Own Reusable Tote Bag for Earth Month!

Posted by Jamie Klinger-Krebs on Apr 25, 2012 4:18:00 PM

reusable tote bagAre you taking part in Earth Month this April? One simple way you can help Mother Earth is to use fewer plastic bags. I love tote bags and use them every time I have to carry or haul something. By making your own tote, you can help to reduce, reuse and recycle.

My project began with a trip to the nearest Goodwill Store & Donation Center in search of denim skirts. Denim is perfect for tote bags, because it’s practically indestructible. The seams are completely finished and fully reinforced. They always come with pockets and these were priced at Goodwill for only $3.99 each.

Begin by turning the skirt wrong side out and sewing the bottom hems together. (On the mini skirt, I used a ruler to draw a line so the bottom would be straight). When complete, flip the skirt right side out.

Next create a box bottom, by matching the bottom seam and side seam to make a triangle. I measured a line to equal 5” across and stitched on that line. Repeat for the other corner, and then turn right side out.

During my trip to Goodwill, I also found some canvas belts (99¢) to use as handles. They’re strong and durable and easier to sew than leather.

Remove the buckle and cut the belt in half. To keep the ends from unraveling, finish the raw edges with a zig-zag stitch. Make sure you position the handles(belt halves) close to the belt loops at the skirt waist band.

These are just two samples of hundreds of ideas. Each bag has plenty of pockets for your phone, money and you can even hook your keys on the belt loops.

My laptop computer fits perfectly in the mini skirt bag. The longer bag is big enough to fill with groceries from the store. Now that’s versatility!

These bags are so much classier than a plastic grocery bag, don’t you think? Enjoy your new tote when you’re celebrating Earth Day, Sunday, April 22nd…and for many years to come.
