The big fashion trends for back to school this fall include color, comfort and retro chic.
Lexi (shown far left) is rocking the Boho Chic look in an updated throw-back to the 1970s. Her midi skirt is a summer sundress turned skirt. (I cut off the top and added an elastic waistband.) Top it with a tie-dye t-shirt and crocheted sweater, and she will be a fashionista hit at her high school. A tweed newsboy hat, lace-up boots and oversized leather bag will take her from fall to spring.

Even kindergarteners can take fashion to the next level. Abby (middle, left) is adorable in Pretty in Prints. The trend this fall is to create an edgy twist on the basics: mixing floral and denim, hard and soft. Her winter-floral skinny jeans are paired with a feminine denim jacket. Throw in some color with a coral t-shirt and she is ready for school, or a lunch date with mom.
Total cost: $16.97
Forever Plaid and Denim is perfect for an active little boy. Classic blue jeans continue to be a wardrobe staple. The graphic t-shirt is a carryover from last season. But, this fall the trend is bigger and bolder. George (middle, right) loved the blue shark on bright orange. A plaid shirt is another classic he can wear to school, or dress up with khakis and add a tie for a holiday party. What kid can resist the light up boots from Stride Rite?
Total cost: $13.96
Activewear has been elevated this season. It’s all about comfort and movability. Gio (shown far right) is perfectly at ease in his Athleisure look. The graphic hoodie in orange is the perfect transition piece from fall into winter. His sweatpants are updated with cuffs and back pockets. Add a navy Henley shirt, cap and Puma sneakers, and he’ll be right at home on the sofa, or at the game. Forget the backpack this year; he’s carrying his gear in a messenger bag.
