Not everyone loves to thrift shop, I get it! Some hate the idea of wearing clothing once owned by a stranger. Others say it takes too much time to sort through clothing and they just don’t get the thrill of thrift stores. Believe me, I understand all of this as I wasn’t always a fan of thrifting either. Now that I’ve been shopping at Goodwill for years, I’ve developed some guidelines that have greatly helped me plan my shopping trips, save money and have the cutest wardrobe ever (if I do say so myself) I’m just sayin…
- Location! Location! Location! This does not just apply to scouting a location for business or homeowners. The same is true for thrift shopping. The variety of merchandise can vary greatly from store to store. My favorite local Goodwill store is located in downtown Chicago on Washington. This store has a great selection of EVERYTHING!
- I love to walk into a Goodwill store that’s clean and organized. This makes shopping so much easier when sizes, colors and departments are clearly displayed. Try to plan for what your needs are before visiting, and be sure to visit those areas in the store first.
- Dress comfortable! This may sound odd; who would’ve thought it takes certain attire to thrift shop? I recommend dressing comfortable because sometimes dressing rooms can be limited and you may want to save time by trying on items out on the sales floor. I typically like to wear leggings, a tank top and a lightweight jacket. This allows me to easily slide clothing on and off with no problem.
- Pay attention to special sale days. Goodwill usually has promotional offers, and you can save money by shopping on the promotional sale days of your most desired items.
- Laundering clothing after your shopping trip is absolutely critical for eliminating the spread of germs and keeping your items in “almost new” condition. I asked my Facebook friends for cleaning advice, here is what they had to say:
