Sheer Genius!

Everything in fashion has gone sheer these days, hasn’t it? Some looks on the runway and red carpet are super cool, but they show a bit more skin than most of us are comfortable with. So, how can the average gal pull off these airy styles when it comes to the summer months? Navigating this trend tastefully, as well as fashionably isn’t as hard as you think. Let me show you how …

Dreamy Summer Accessories

If ever there was a season to ramp up your accessory game it’s summer—pure and simple. Why? Because we pare down on our clothing due to the warm weather, but we also adopt lighter fabrics as well as more flowing clothing to catch the breeze and celebrate the beauty of nature. This allows for more embellishment to add to our ensembles! Summer accessories should take their cues from what we see around us; the golden rays of the sun, the way it glimmers and shines on the water of pools, lakes, and maybe, if you’re lucky, the ocean! This week I collected an assortment of accessories that could be worn year round but are still perfectly suited for the anticipated season ahead!

Top It Off!

One of the best things about summer here in the Midwest is ditching the winter duds for bright and breezy clothing! It seems the minute the temperature goes above let’s say 40 degrees, people start sporting flip flops, maxi dresses and short shorts! Since our season is rather short, it’s very wise to be ready for the warm and welcoming sunshine with a wardrobe full of wearable separates. This week we’ll take a look at some spectacular tops I picked up at Goodwill. What’s great about tops is that they can be worn alone, or they look awesome as a layering piece under blazers, shirts and jackets. You really need to have some basic pieces like tank tops and plain t-shirts of course, but you should also keep on the lookout for stand-out toppers like the ones in my slideshow.

Late Summer Fashion Spotlight

Each season when I attend New York Fashion Week, I’m inspired with so many ideas by a multitude of designers that, at times, it’s hard to keep it all in perspective. So, when someone asks me which show, or should I say, which designer was my favorite, it’s a hard question to answer. I usually have to go back and review all the thousands of photographs I’ve taken throughout the week to come up with an informed response. As I looked through the shots I took at designer Luis Antonio’s runway show, I realized that every single look he did, and every print the chose, was absolutely perfect! For more about this Puerto Rico born designer, check out his brief biography here. Not too over the top, not too derivative, but overall, just right.  Accessible, yet modern and traditional without being boring is a good summation of his take on fashion today. The big story this season with this designer was his mastery of using print fabrics and combining them to make beautiful garments. I’m going to highlight a few of his looks below, but please click through the slideshow to take in all of his glorious work. I think you’ll agree that this was truly a memorable collection.

Manning Up Fashion!

The return of Men’s Fashion Week just concluded in New York City, and with that, the focus on male style has taken a giant leap forward in the minds of the public at large. On the scene for the numerous daily shows and presentations was my dear friend and fabulous fashion blogger, Kim Cihlar. I thought I’d impose upon her to share with us an insider’s sneak peek of what the powers that be on the men’s fashion scene have in store for the super stylish man!

Sizzling Summer Runway Trends

Summertime clothing choices should be fun and fancy free, right? Well, those bold colors, breezy fabrics and casual comfort were all on display at the runway show I attended for Spanish designer Custo Barcelona’s Spring and Summer 2015 Collection (www.custobarcelona.com). While the models are quite obviously not what you would call average in looks or even sizing, one thing we can take away from the presentation are the ideas about what’s in style for the season we’re in. While these ideas are not always meant to be literal, they could be if they’re suitable for you and your personal tastes. When I go through these photos I took at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York City, I see ways to update anyone’s style game by taking clues and adapting those themes for the real world (the one that is far from the runway)! Let’s take a look at some of the models and identify trends we can ALL get behind …

DIY Runway Look!

There’s something about beautiful flowers that make us happy isn’t there? Even the toughest customer will notice the lush beauty and artistry of a floral arrangement outside a home or business. The natural world, especially floral motifs have been an inspiration for fashion designers since the beginning of time. Both decorative and feminine, floral blooms are responsible for one of the single most prevalent design aesthetics in history!

White Hot Summer Fashion

Even though white is literally an absence of color, there is no absence of style when it comes to summer fashions that feature this bright and breezy tone. From the runways of New York Fashion Week, I have chosen some of the best looks to illustrate my point this week. Wearing white can be tricky at times, but with some modification, there are some sure-fire looks that can work for anyone!

Summer Scarf Essentials

It would not be an overstatement to say that scarves are by far the simplest, most inexpensive, and creative way to spark up a summer wardrobe. These bits of fabric come in a variety of colors, patterns, fabrics and sizes, making them suitable for multiple uses and styling possibilities. In my book there are really only three sizes of MUST HAVE scarves! These would be the old-fashioned cotton handkerchief size, the long-and-narrow, and the pashmina. These three are so versatile and easy to work with that even the “scarf-phobic” can find a way to utilize their charm. Let’s get the summer styling ideas started!

Tie Top DIY!

Staying organized is hard to do sometimes when you’re a buyer and seller of vintage and resale items. I have racks and racks of clothing from different eras
taking up quite a bit of space at my home studio. In addition, I’ve always been drawn to sewing patterns from different eras as well. The original DIY fashions, I guess you could say! Sometimes these fashions can serve as inspiration or reference, or in the case of this week’s blog, both! While out shopping at the Goodwill near my house for some summer items for an upcoming photo shoot, I came across this lovely floral sleeveless top by Ralph Lauren in a rich cotton. As is, it’s a great summer staple for sure, but with a few tweaks I knew I could take it to a new level of sophistication and fun! This project is so simple that literally anyone can do it. It doesn’t require major sewing skills, but being able to run a simple straight stitch on a sewing machine could help. You might also take this to a friend who could help you with it, in exchange for something you could do for him or her! Bartering is a great way to accomplish things, and it doesn’t cost you a thing!

Surefire Summer Style

There’s an ease to summer fashions that ‘s all about comfort isn’t there? You know what I mean, right?  I’m talking about some simple pieces which can be thrown on when the weather is hot, but still allow us to look cool and stylish. Summer dressing is all about color, texture and accessories. Ditch the ill fitting baggy t-shirts, the oversized cargo shorts, and save those for your next camping trip okay?  This week we’re going to take a look at surefire ways to rev up your style as the mercury rises. Last year in the heat of the summer, I attended an outdoor fashion show in downtown Chicago at Daley Plaza. The looks being shown were pretty much pieces any gal could wear just by mixing and matching. If you don’t have any of the items I’ll be describing here in this post, now might be the time to start pulling together some bits and pieces that fit the bill so-to-speak, from the Goodwill in your neighborhood, for starters … and then let the summer fun begin!

Boys' Club

Who says it’s just the ladies who get to have some fun with fashion? Not me. I’m a firm believer that men and boys can really get into dressing stylishly when given some food for thought. This week I’m introducing you to the Spring and Summer 2015 Collection from Spanish designer, Custo Barcelona. His exuberant, playful, and funky designs for men and women are a little over-the-top in the best way possible. Colorful, casual, and just plain cool … let’s take a look at some of the dudes who walked the runway at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in NYC.
