Sheer Genius!

Everything in fashion has gone sheer these days, hasn’t it? Some looks on the runway and red carpet are super cool, but they show a bit more skin than most of us are comfortable with. So, how can the average gal pull off these airy styles when it comes to the summer months? Navigating this trend tastefully, as well as fashionably isn’t as hard as you think. Let me show you how …

Beyond the Pale Fashions

Pastels that have just a hint of color have always signaled spring, summer, and sophistication when it comes to formal occasions. With June in full swing, the brides, bridesmaids, and attendees of weddings and events across the country are looking for unique and modern ways to dress for the warmer season ahead. Designer Nina Skarra of Norway, isn’t necessarily a bridal designer, but when I saw this collection during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week S/S 2013, I couldn’t help but think of the subtle glamour of old Hollywood, as well as how well-suited her pieces would be for a formal summer affair!

Dreamy Summer Accessories

If ever there was a season to ramp up your accessory game it’s summer—pure and simple. Why? Because we pare down on our clothing due to the warm weather, but we also adopt lighter fabrics as well as more flowing clothing to catch the breeze and celebrate the beauty of nature. This allows for more embellishment to add to our ensembles! Summer accessories should take their cues from what we see around us; the golden rays of the sun, the way it glimmers and shines on the water of pools, lakes, and maybe, if you’re lucky, the ocean! This week I collected an assortment of accessories that could be worn year round but are still perfectly suited for the anticipated season ahead!

Top It Off!

One of the best things about summer here in the Midwest is ditching the winter duds for bright and breezy clothing! It seems the minute the temperature goes above let’s say 40 degrees, people start sporting flip flops, maxi dresses and short shorts! Since our season is rather short, it’s very wise to be ready for the warm and welcoming sunshine with a wardrobe full of wearable separates. This week we’ll take a look at some spectacular tops I picked up at Goodwill. What’s great about tops is that they can be worn alone, or they look awesome as a layering piece under blazers, shirts and jackets. You really need to have some basic pieces like tank tops and plain t-shirts of course, but you should also keep on the lookout for stand-out toppers like the ones in my slideshow.

Tassels, Tassels Everywhere

tassel is a finishing feature in fabric and clothing decoration. It is a universal ornament that is seen in varying versions in many cultures around the globe.”  - This is the Wikipedia description for the word “tassel."  Basically, a tassel is a type of decoration which has been around for a very long time and, just like anything that has historic value, it has been modified and reimagined over-and-over again in popular culture worldwide.

Ringing in New Year’s Style

Where does style come from? Is it studied, or is it something we’re born with? I think the answer is BOTH. Getting inspired and excited about design is within the realm of everyone whether they think they’re stylish or not. Appreciating great fashion design and ideas doesn’t necessarily mean you want to wear them. It simply means you have an interest in incorporating new thoughts on color, shape, and texture into your own wardrobe. There is no better place to find inspiration than New York Fashion Week. In the slideshow below you’ll find examples of forward thinking from one of my favorite designers, Son Jung Wan. You can find out more about this Korean-born designer in her bio. Her clothing tells a story about design. Illustrated in vibrant hues, draping, and unconventional approaches to traditional garments, her men’s and women’s looks are playful and striking.  Just take a look at the slideshow, I’m sure you’ll be moved to add some spice to your New Year’s closet!

Winter Formal

Some of the most magical and beautiful fashion moments are made when people dress up for formal events in the wintertime. There’s just something about an ethereal dress that makes the wearer feel like Cinderella for the night. One of the most famous designers in the world, Tadashi Shoji, is an expert at manipulating fabric and silhouette into the most exquisite gowns and formal dresses you’ll ever see. I took these photographs during the last Mercedes Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center in NYC when his Autumn/Winter 2015 Collection was shown. You may be able to take some cues from the trends here but, most of all, just enjoy the view as the creations float down the runway …

Men’s Fall Fashion Rocks!

Concept Korea showcases Korean fashion designers and their best ideas at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week twice a year. I always try to attend simply because they tend to be a little more over-the-top in a good way! For Fall and Winter 2015, one of the two featured runway shows had a whimsical and out-of-the-ordinary menswear looks created by a designer named Tae Yong. His take on what men should, and could, wear for fall and winter was definitely not your basic khaki-and-button-down combo. But, like I always say, there’s an element in every outfit and garment that leads us to other trends or, it could be worn on its own instead of employing the over-the-top styling most runway shows require to make them more “showy.” Take a look at the slideshow below and you’ll find yourself smiling at some of these wacky menswear pieces! But, without a doubt you’ll develop an understanding that Tae Yong’s garments are beautifully made, and with a little modification they could become wearable to the bro’s here in the Midwest.

Kooky Can Be Cool ...

When looking at fashion images, it’s sometimes distracting the way models are styled for runways or presentations. I challenge you to look at the photos I took last February at the Saunder presentation. Emily Saunder was born in New York to British parents, and “her pieces encapsulate the essence of femininity, but with a quirky-eclectic twist, providing beautifully unique clothes for every occasion.” If you can see past the ghostly makeup and frizzy coiffures, you’ll notice some very wearable, and yes, edgy fashion on display. Here’s the ideas I think are cool …

Pick 5 for Fall Fashion - Part 2

Michelle Gill (shown in the photo on the left with Danette, the store manager of the Goodwill Store and Donation Center on Palmer Street in Milwaukee) is part of the team at Fashionable Demand, a fashion consulting and editorial styling enterprise. As part of my on-going series of spotlighting fashion voices and their choices, I asked her to pick five items that would make her fall fashion must-have list. Here’s what she picked and why …

Cozy Up to Fall Fashion

Now that fall has arrived, a lot of people I know can’t wait to reach for their cozy sweaters and coats for comfort from the chill. For many, fall is a favorite time of year simply because of the fashion choices we can make!  Last February in New York, I attended the BCBG MaxAzria Fall 2015 runway show, where almost every look was relaxed and cozy looking. Rich with details such as leather, woven textures, fur trim and oversized sweaters. The pieces the designer presented were wearable and fun for women of almost any age. In the Midwest, dressing for cold weather is part of our DNA, and the ideas shown in the photographs I took provide great food for thought as we inevitably head down winter’s path.
