Streetwise Style for Everyone!

Over the years I’ve taken notice that the style I see on the street OUTSIDE of the New York Fashion Week shows is often more chic and wearable than what is being shown INSIDE on the runway! The people who actually attend the shows pull together looks representing what’s in style for THEM.

Tastefully Sheer Fashion

For the spring and summer fashion of 2017, we have been noticing the vast amount of exposure that the gauzy trend is bringing to the style table. (Pun intended.) If cutouts and sheer panels scare you a little bit, that’s okay, because there are ways to make this fit for a more refined sensibility.

Recycled Style with Shady Lady Accessories

Some people just have an eye for turning trash into treasure, as they say. My friend model, make-up artist and actress, Neda Stevic does just that with her Shady Lady accessories. Fashion is about being unique, and nothing is better than a one-of-a-kind piece! She has shown her wares at New Orleans Fashion Week, and often auctions off pieces and donates the proceeds to charity. You can check out her Facebook page here.

Let's Get Fresh!

The word fresh conjures up all things that seem crisp, clean, bright, happy, colorful, and modern in my opinion. To support this view, I went to my local Goodwill Store & Donation Center, and pulled together the items in this article, as a literal take on how “fresh” translates into style to me.

Thrifting with the Thrift King!

I was shopping in NYC a few years back and went into a thrift store on 3rd Avenue around 21st Street. Behind the counter was an old friend from Milwaukee, whom I hadn’t seen for quite a while, Ricky Becker. He’s the owner of The Spooky Boutique, a fabulous collection of vintage he sourced from thrift stores, flea markets and Goodwill. He has sold his vintage wares to the likes of Chloe Sevigny, Vanessa Hudgens, Florence Welch of Florence + the Machine, Adele, Kelly Rowland, Lisa Bonet, the late Patricia Neal and Erykah Badu during his career in “the rag trade.”

He currently resides in Milwaukee. Here’s his “expert” take on shoppi

Fashion for All

Plus size retailer Lane Bryant has partnered up with high-end designer Prabal Gurung to promote the inclusion of women of all shapes into the world of fashion. I saw this interview on CBS This Morning and found it to be quite a refreshing and eye-opening look into the subject. As someone who has navigated Fashion Week in NYC for over a decade, it’s about time we address a lot of the folks who don’t fit the fashion industries size 0 or 2 standards. You can check out the full interview here.

Spring Ahead!

An early spring prediction wasn’t to be on Groundhog Day, but that doesn’t mean we can’t start looking forward to more light, longer days and fresh colors. American designer Dennis Basso served up soft tones mixed with high glamour details in this look back at his Spring and Summer 2015 New York Fashion Week Collection.

Men’s Fashion Week Highlights

For many years, men’s fashions were shown alongside women’s fashions during the same hectic week in NYC. That all changed a few years ago when men got their own coverage at a different time. I want you to check out the menswear in the slideshow below featuring photos supplied by each designer’s PR people. For more information about the designers just follow the provided links.

Seeing Red

Red can vary in hue from orange-red to violet-red, and for each hue there’s a wide variety of shades and tints ranging from very light pink to dark burgundy with names like scarlet, cardinal, vermillion, crimson, and ruby. In China, India and many other Asian countries red is the color that portrays happiness and good fortune.

A Fresh Coat!

The Persians were the first people to make coats. “Coat” is also one of the first clothing category words in the English language. Later, coats were divided into over coats and under coats. Today an over coat would be considered a winter coat, and worn as the outermost layer. An under coat might now be considered a jacket or blazer, or it may even be referred to as a sport coat in men’s clothing terminology. But, no matter what you call it, a coat is the easiest way to look pulled together in a flash!

Winter Dreams

With the end of winter still a few months away, our fashion thoughts start to turn towards shifting gears a little bit. In the midst of our cabin fever we start to dream of color, texture and other ways to help ease us through until springtime. Designer Ran Fan founded her label in London in 2009, and she definitely has her own ideas on what fashion should (and can be) if you just use your imagination.
