There are summer staples like knit t-shirts and tank tops of course, but this week I prefer to look at more stylish options for the discriminating fashionista. Goodwill is a great source for exploration in the world of fashion. At Goodwill everything is arranged by size, color and the type of garment it is. I decided to look for some cool summer tops, or sleeveless blouses that could dress up or down with just about anything you pair it with.
Fashion isn’t just about what we wear, but why we wear it. Clothing isn’t just something to keep us warm, but an indicator of how we live our lives. This summer the Museum of Wisconsin Art in West Bend, Wisconsin is featuring “A State of Fashion” now through September 17th. I was asked to do a fashion talk there last week and was so impressed with the museum that I wanted to share it with you through my photographs below in the slideshow.
Sometimes when I shop at Goodwill, although it’s very rare, I DON’T have an idea of what I’m looking for. But those are days when I’m looking to be inspired by color, texture or pattern for a recycling project. This week I decided to use my $5 Club Goodwill reward to shop. I thought it would be a challenge to spend ONLY the $5. While I was looking through the craft section I noted that there were plastic handles for tote bags for $1.99, and that got me thinking that I could make a tote out from the fabric of a garment, to utilize them.
We put together three great looks featuring Goodwill items. Like I always say, fashion isn’t a price tag, it’s an attitude, a feeling, a statement. We will let the photos speak for themselves.
Prints are always one of those things that people like to debate about. Some people love them, while others avoid them entirely. Print garments draw the eye and bring attention to the wearer for sure, but there are ways to make them work for everyone.
Choker necklaces have a long history in the fashion accessory world. They were worn as early as the First Century A.D. In the 19th Century, Queen Alexandra of the United Kingdom was said to have started a fashion trend for chokers when she wore one to cover a small scar she had on her neck. Since then they have drifted in and out of fashion like so many other accessories do. As of right now chokers are being featured prominently in stores and in fashion spreads in magazines.
This week Goodwill Fashion Expert, Bjorn Nasett takes Milwaukee Fashion Blogger, Pamela Kieck on a Goodwill shopping excursion where they discuss what to look for at Goodwill and how to wear it!
What is the future of fashion? To answer that question, we would have to look at many factors including social attitudes, globalism and, most importantly, new up-and-coming designers who can interpret the changes happening in the world every day while reflect those ideas in their fashions. I recently attended the “Transcend” fashion show, put on by Mount Mary University and held in downtown Milwaukee at the Turner Hall Ballroom. It’s always interesting to see what student designers have up their sleeves. (Pun intended!) What’s exciting about seeing their work on the runway is that it all came from the same place—an idea. Just like I always say about utilizing the resources of your local Goodwill store to polish your own style, fashion always starts with new and fresh ideas.
Everybody loves denim. I don’t think that there is any man, woman or child who does not have a pair of jeans is there? There are classic denim jackets of course, but there are other ways to incorporate denim into your everyday looks. This week I collaborated with local Milwaukee fashion blogger Riva Treasure.
