“A tassel is a finishing feature in fabric and clothing decoration. It is a universal ornament that is seen in varying versions in many cultures around the globe.” - This is the Wikipedia description for the word “tassel." Basically, a tassel is a type of decoration which has been around for a very long time and, just like anything that has historic value, it has been modified and reimagined over-and-over again in popular culture worldwide.
Recently I was hosting a fashion show at the Wauwatosa Women’s Club, and I noted the many outfits complemented by necklaces featuring the distinctive ornamentation of tassels. I’ve seen this trend a lot over the last few years, and I believe it ties in directly with the bohemian look of tunics, peasant dresses, and the outdoor-festival look that’s so prevalent on fashionable gals everywhere these days! In the slideshow below I’ve included some of the pieces I photographed before the show—and you’ll notice one of our wonderful Goodwill models, Maureen, displaying one of the looks she wears in real life also in the show as well!
A tassel necklace is easy to wear, and easy to find, too! I bought some examples from Goodwill (as well as another big-box retailer) to share with you. And, guess what? The pieces I bought at Goodwill were actually better quality that the “new” ones I purchased elsewhere!
Quality is a relative thing isn’t it? But, the weight of an item, as well as the way it moves should always be an indication of high quality in most cases. Next time you’re out shopping at one of our stores, why not take a gander into the jewelry case, or at the racked necklaces to see if there’s something that inspires your style!
