Summertime clothing choices should be fun and fancy free, right? Well, those bold colors, breezy fabrics and casual comfort were all on display at the runway show I attended for Spanish designer Custo Barcelona’s Spring and Summer 2015 Collection (www.custobarcelona.com). While the models are quite obviously not what you would call average in looks or even sizing, one thing we can take away from the presentation are the ideas about what’s in style for the season we’re in. While these ideas are not always meant to be literal, they could be if they’re suitable for you and your personal tastes. When I go through these photos I took at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York City, I see ways to update anyone’s style game by taking clues and adapting those themes for the real world (the one that is far from the runway)! Let’s take a look at some of the models and identify trends we can ALL get behind …
Metallic tones add shimmer and shine to all kinds of clothing this summer. Here we see a printed metallic in a sheer bronze color with cut outs at the hip. To me this would clearly be a beach cover up, but again, the idea here of contrasting the trim and the simplicity of the design makes it a winner.
Bold colors like this hot-pink jacket, paired with a one-piece tankini swimsuit are right on target. Summer is all about bringing out the bright, tropical feeling in whatever you wear, so find a way to make your own bold statement with a blouse, dress, or top.
Mixing it up is the way to go for summer! Mixing textures, patterns and fabrics has never been more in fashion. Here we see a long-sleeved top over cotton slacks for a covered up, yet comfortable look to take you through the warm temperatures.
Prints are more ethnic than ever this year! Taking inspiration from cultures around the world to form patterns and colors reflect global style. The embellished dress here is over-the-top for sure, but it illustrates the richness of detail, which can be found in an assortment of the top trends. The scalloped hem and short length show off the legs while the ¾-sleeve and full coverage keep it classy!
Menswear is cool and casual as well this year. A classic tank top with black-and- white patterning is matched with a slouchy shirt jacket in the same fabric. But, what’s interesting here are the textured lounge pants which are all the rage right now. They exist somewhere between jogging pants and khakis, and feature a loose fit that would be awesome for going to the beach, or to a picnic.
