Rock and Roll Runway!

Posted by Jamie Klinger-Krebs on Feb 3, 2016 1:58:19 PM

Rock-n-roll RunwayThe design duo Mark and Estel are very unique in the fashion world. As I waited with the rest of the photographers for their show to begin at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, I didn’t know what to expect from the collection they were about to show that afternoon. As it turned out, this talented two-some not only created and displayed flowing dresses and punk-influenced leggings, but they also presented wearable separates like jackets, slacks, blouses and skirts. But, the biggest surprise came at the end of the show when they took to the runway themselves, along with their models, to perform original songs! The bold vocals translated seamlessly into the fashion voice they brought out in their designs. Since the pair is based in Los Angeles, you can see how the rock scene has quite literally, been the inspiration behind some of their garments.

Trends to spot:

  • Sheer fabrics
  • Bustiers
  • Capes
  • Split-sleeve treatments
  • Plaids of all kinds
  • Wrap dresses
  • Satin gowns
  • Bow blouses
  • Cropped pants
  • Lace
  • Hats
  • Double-breasted looks
  • Dramatic eyeliner

There were many looks that spoke to me from this collection. And, I especially liked the way the rock-and-roll feeling was paired with almost lady-like bow blouses. I also loved the long, flowing gowns which moved as the models walked. But, you must always remember that looking at a runway fashion show is like looking inside the thoughts of the designers themselves. They are revealing to the viewer ideas of what is cool, and fashion forward. It’s like a menu at a restaurant, you pick what you like and then leave the rest. Think about what you’ve seen here and then shop Goodwill to create your own version in your own way. It’s all rock and roll to me!
