Spring Trend Watch Part 2

Posted by Jamie Klinger-Krebs on Feb 13, 2014 10:21:00 AM

spring trendsWhen you read this, I will be in New York City for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.  Designers from all over the country and the world will be letting industry insiders take a peek at the collections they’ve created for the season to come. In February the fall collections are shown, and in September the spring collections are presented. This timeline allows for buyers and tastemakers to sort through the thousands of creations on display during this week-long style sojourn and whittle it down to the pieces, colors, and silhouettes that they think we the public will be interested in wearing. Sometimes they’re right on the mark, and at other times the trends being promoted simply don’t catch on. Because I go as a photographer, I have a bird’s eye view of the models as they sashay down the runway, inviting us into their fashion world. Today I’ll share with you five more of my Spring/Summer 2014 trends, illustrated by the photographs I took …

Black and white is always a fresh look because of the contrast it can provide.  The two opposing ends of the color spectrum can be put together in many combinations to great fashion effect. This shot from the Desigual show has some simple pieces that have been done with some eye-catching graphic prints. She looks polished and confident, and most important of all, demonstrates the wearability of this venerable trend.

bjorn Soft and MutedFrom the stark reality of black and white we segue to the soft, dreamy tones of painterly prints. This halter dress from designer Lela Rose is a subtle reminder of the power of the right print. The print here features many colors gently mingled into an almost hand-dyed effect. The tones range from deep purple to citron yellow, with bits and pieces of Kelly green. Keep an eye out for artisan prints like this one that stand-alone as well as create support for the neutrals in your closet.

bjorn FuturisticThe future is here and the clothes have photo prints on them! These two ladies are both wearing dresses that feature bold photo-realistic prints on the fabric.  These images take center stage on the white dress, and are a stand out on the richly detailed skirt of the red dress. The nude illusion inset is also a trend to watch. The flesh-toned inset panel creates the impression that there is a lot of skin showing without looking too vulgar. Are they over the top? Yes, but remember that ideas don’t mean YOU have to wear them, but knowledge of them could help freshen up your wardrobe with a version that does work.

bjorn Wider LegThe great pants debate will continue to be a topic of discussion. In the photo here the designer featured both a higher waist and a wider pants leg. This trend is not for everyone, but it does create an elegant silhouette when done in rich fabrics like this. I tend to like this look in a dress pant rather than jeans.

bjorn 80sThe 80’s called, and they want to come home! This young lady is bringing back the over shirt that was very popular during that era. It features a contrasting yoke that seems almost western as well as contrasting collar and cuffs. Paired with modern striped leggings, it comes across as demure and fun!  The bright top also hits her at just the right place on her hips without being too short or too long.  Proportion is something to keep in mind when playing with this fun trend.

These are but a few of the new ideas you may want to try out for the spring and summer season to come.  Whenever you shop at Goodwill, remember to shop with purpose. Go prepared to do fashion battle. Know what you’d like to look for but keep your mind open to things that may be out of your comfort zone. Buying a few key pieces at Goodwill could elevate your style to new fashion heights! As always your purchases help lift up those less fortunate with vital training programs and support.
