Outerwear Obsessed

Posted by Jamie Klinger-Krebs on Oct 23, 2013 2:53:00 PM

outerwear leather2Maybe it’s because I have spent my entire life in the Midwest, maybe it’s because I like the fashion choices they provide.  Maybe it’s just because when the weather gets cold, I like having options. All right, I’m going to come clean, it’s really because I am obsessed with outerwear! There’s just nothing to me that spells out F-A-L-L like a fantastic coat or jacket. I know that most of us own serviceable coats, but every stylish guy or gal knows that where the climate is chilly it’s important to have a wide variety of coats to complement not only your fashion moods, but also the wildly changing temperatures in this part of the country. This week let’s talk about styles of coats and jackets that will help you lay a good foundation for cozy, cold-weather style.

Layering is an important element in fashion right now and this will only continue in the future. Learning to layer your outerwear to coordinate with your outfit is a snap when you know the types of coats you should have in your closet. Most of these styles are unisex in theory and only differentiate with details and tailoring.

outerwear denimjacket1. Denim jackets are by far the most iconic American fashion, second only to the denim jean. These coats are made for rugged wear and work in a pinch with almost anything from dresses for the ladies, to cords and khakis for guys. Denim does not have to be traditional in styling. It can also be found in trench coats and other styles. This is a MUST HAVE piece.

outerwear peacoat2. Pea coats take their inspiration from the utilitarian warm wool coats that were created for the military. The classic color is a dark inky blue/black and has a classic Naval appeal. They are usually hip length and have a tailored, yet casual appearance. See if you can find designer inspired takes on this classic coat while out shopping at Goodwill.

outerwear topcoat3. Topcoats are longer and dressier than their counter parts on this list.  Think of “Mad Men” where the guys wore a topcoat over their suits and the ladies had belted versions that they wore over their office ensembles.  I always think of these as a great option for the businessperson, but the average guy or gal should only have one if they’ll actually wear it.

outerwear leather4. Leather jackets aren’t just for bikers. Granted it does give a man a more rugged look, but just be careful with your choice or you could come off like “The Fonz.” Leather in general is a good bet if it’s made of high quality leather. Nothing dry or cracked and definitely not too soft; these are dead giveaways of poor quality.

outerwear parka5. Parkas have come a long way since they were only in the use of explorers or hunters. Now there’s lots of styles and types on the fashion front. The ones to look for are the longer versions as opposed to the type which skiers wear which is short and stops at the waistline. The longer ones provide real protection from inclement weather, and when found in neutral tones, can be dressed up or down to suit the occasion and purpose.

Just think about it, the first thing people see in the winter is your coat! That’s why I think it’s high time you took stock of your own coats and jackets and take a trip to Goodwill to see what you can find. Who says you can’t be stylish AND warm this winter? And, with our prices you won’t be left out in the cold!
