What They Wore ... Part 2

Posted by Jamie Klinger-Krebs on Sep 24, 2013 4:21:00 PM

Euro Man StyleFor those of you that read my column here last week, you’ll know that a large part of New York City’s twice yearly Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, is all about the personal style people show off out on the street. Quite honestly the sidewalk is hands down the best runway in town! I’ve always thought that what people actually wear is much more of an indicator of where fashion is going, or for that matter, precisely where it is at this moment. So, I’ve combed through my shots and pulled together some more of the good, the bad, and the questionable, as they strutted their stuff and posed for pictures.

Euro Man Style

This guy is way too suave! He has a casual elegance here that reminds me a little of an Italian aristocrat. The accessories here say it all. Dark Ray Ban shades? Check. Ascot tied at the neck? Check. Monogrammed velvet loafers? Check. Leather portfolio/statement bag? Check. He also has on the trendy camouflage slacks that add a modern flair to this outfit. What I can do without is the rolled hem on the pants. Not a judgment, just not my taste!  But isn’t that what fashion is all about?

Anyone who remembers Madonna’s outfits early in her career during the 80’s will get this gal’s get up. I like all the elements that she combined to make a memorable moment on the street! Here you can see evidence of a bunch of separates that work. The pleated man-tailored pants look great on her rolled at the hem and worn with the bright gold metallic heels. A simple sleeveless t-shirt allows the wide belt with ornate buckle and the “red lips” necklace to shine.  Denim jackets are ALWAYS in style, but here she has a stonewashed one that plays into the vintage vibe. Add in some cool shades and a simple handbag and she’s good to go anywhere in this funky look!!

Tutu MuchTutu Much

This is what I would call a whiteout. Or should that be fashion wipeout? There is so much going on here! It has pants, petals; see-through bits, shoulder details and cutouts! I’m sorry but it’s not cool enough for a “Lady Gaga” moment, and it’s not chic enough for anyone to take her as a serious fashionista. Her grade is a D+, because at least it fits her well - whatever it is.

I noticed this lady, not only because of the colors of her ensemble, but because of her great and sunny attitude. I told her that I liked her unique necklace and she was so happy to tell me that a friend of hers had made it for her. I actually like it with the ethnic inspired tunic dress that she’s wearing. She was smart enough to keep everything else on the neutral side of the spectrum, including her make up.  She also showed me a sticker that said “worst dressed” that she actually received from Joan Rivers of the “Fashion Police” on cable TV as she passed by her in the lobby of Lincoln Center. She gave it to her because she hated the necklace! Overall, this look isn’t for everyone, but this lady was happy with herself and her outfit, and that’s all that matters. Oh well, you can’t please everyone!

This young lady had a wonderful presence that said “confident.”  The tapestry dress with full skirt fit her like a glove and didn’t need much else in the way of accessories. The platform lace-up booties in neutral tan suede didn’t detract at all and gave her a nice leg line. But, the star of her show was the vintage YSL (Yves Saint Laurent) bag that belonged to her mother. This is about as effortless as you can be. You simply notice how stunning this young woman really is!

As always, with a few good ideas, and a Goodwill Store & Donation Center nearby, you can create high-fashion looks for a lot less than retail - and your runway can be anywhere you please!
