We hardy folks in the Midwest don’t just ease into summer do we? It always seems as though the hot weather is upon us all of a sudden, and all the outdoor summer activities kick into high gear in the blink of an eye. That leaves a lot of us wondering why we didn’t start thinking about refreshing some of our fair climate fashion ahead of time. Don’t get caught without a few new pieces for the upcoming festivals, picnics, and family vacations. Head on down to the local Goodwill and stock up on family-friendly fashions at affordable prices.  Here’s what the whole gang will need to keep them looking and feeling cool. 

Dads need new clothing too, so how about picking up a few polo shirts in bright colors or stripes to replace the faded or worn out ones they love to wear. This classic shirt will work for playing out in the yard with the kids, as well as dress up a pair of khaki shorts for going into town. Speaking of shorts guys, do you know how easy it is to transform a pair of cargo pants into shorts?  If your wife or significant other isn’t up for the challenge, I’m sure someone else could help you do it. Cut off to the length desired and hem with iron on hem tape. That’s it!  Cargo shorts come in handy when you need extra roomy pockets for holding all your stuff, especially when it comes to cell phones, etc. when you’re out and about and don’t have a coat pocket.

Moms should always be on the lookout for easy daytime dresses. They’re the go-to item for most women for the summer.  First and foremost consider the simple shift dress. Slightly fitted and sleeveless, this style is perfect for most women of every size and shape. The a-line cut skims the body, but also defines it. Bright floral patterns are very chic right now; so make sure to find a print that makes you feel happy and confident. You may also consider the maxi-dress, which is like a to-the-floor version of a sundress. Halter-top styles allow you to get some sun on your back and keep the cool breezes blowing…

Sister looks great in her t-shirts and short shorts, but how about considering button down short sleeved blouses? The retro style is coming back, and looks fashion forward when tucked into high waist shorts.  While you’re at it trying to update your look, ditch the flip flops, and look for canvas espadrilles, wedges, and sophisticated sandals and you can take your style to a whole new level.

Brother better have lots of t-shirts on hand for all the summer sports and activities he has planned.  But, just like dad and sis, he could opt for button downs, polo’s, and tank tops, too. Cargo shorts are par for the course, but also scan the racks for cotton golf shorts in plaids and stripes for a preppy collegiate look. Save the athletic sandals for the beach, and locate some cool canvas Chuck Taylor’s or other retro-look tennis shoe to wear instead. It’ll provide greater protection for your feet as well as better overall style coverage!
