When Nature Calls

Posted by Jamie Klinger-Krebs on Mar 14, 2013 9:47:00 AM

Nature callsHistorically, artists, writers and designers have always had a love affair with nature and all the botanical beauty surrounding it. Because of that, sonnets, paintings, sculptures and even clothing and jewelry have fallen under the spell of the natural world at one point in or another. Take for example the ancient Greeks and their love for the leaf. In their society these wreath-like headpieces were used as an adornment that would indicate the wearer’s station in life, occupation or social standing. These very elaborate wreaths were worn like crowns and would often be constructed of gold and other precious metals. Vegetation was also used to crown the winners at the original Olympic games. Like everything else in the fashion and design world, updating these, and many other ancient historical symbols, will never go out of style. But, for today’s trendsetter, the undeniable allure of what nature provides as inspiration and celebrating it has become a fashion classic, in particular when it comes to accessories.

Nature callsEffortless and chic is the way to go if you are new to the nature movement. You might opt for something like a single leaf pendant on a necklace done in gold or silver to put you in the outdoorsy mood. The twiggy pendant is yet another way to access nature as a necklace. There are literally tons of variations on this topic, and it is really up to you to figure out just how much botanical love you have for this growing trend.

Nature callsRings are a great addition to any accessory wardrobe, so why not look for a dainty leafy bough to adorn your digits? The solitary branch is such a cool way to bring spring style out just a little early. I have furthermore seen rings that resemble a piece of tree trunk, or bark, so keep those eyes peeled for what strikes your fancy and also what is relevant to your feeling about the natural world.

Colorful enamel work can be seen on some, while others stick to the hue of the metal itself. I love the look of a single flower, like an orchid on a pendant, ring, or earrings. flower necklaceThere is something ultra feminine, yet fashion forward about it. For the accessory novice, it is always best to opt for something on the more delicate side, so as not to seem as though there’s a garden growing round your neck!

Organic shapes that defy definition, but look somewhat like nature, are likely to show up too. Wooden and metal mushroom-shaped rings, glass pendants with moss in them, and the rest, take us into the more abstract side of nature accessories, and are a fun and whimsical take on the trend. Heck, how about a bonsai tree ring?

Reinvention is the sincerest form of flattery, so that’s why I always try to give fresh ideas on what you may want to look for when you’re out shopping at our favorite store. Whether it’s a floral brooch from the 1960’s, or a far-out leafy necklace from the 1970’s, it’s all about how YOU rock it. Oh and did I mention the polished rock trend? LOL!! Have fun, get out of the house and on the way to a stylish spring with all the bounty of nature, and with prices like Goodwill’s you’ll get a bumper crop of fabulous fashion!
