Fashion Week Breakdown Part 2: The Men

Posted by Jamie Klinger-Krebs on Mar 6, 2013 6:00:00 AM

I have heard countless women complain that the men in their life don’t have a clue when it comes to the subject of stylish dressing. One of my favorite activities to do while I’m in New York City for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week twice a year is to catch sight of guys who have their own grasp on what makes a man well dressed. Throughout history men have rode a virtual roller coaster of style. Not that long ago, a man never left the house without a debonair hat! Nowadays anything goes, and a hat would mean a baseball cap. Unfortunately that means the most ill fitted and bland clothing are the go-to items for most guys every day.  The idea of standing out has taken on a negative connotation in some circles, and the average Joe tends to dress more like a fashion casualty, than casually cool. The rules of color texture and pattern apply to men as well as women with few distinctions. Let’s break down the apparel of the gentlemen who boldly take style where few men dare to tread, but should.

Classy CoralClassy Coral

This dapper man just radiated charm and charisma! He reminded me of a young Will Smith, right? He kept it all classy by layering on the black with shoes, socks, slacks, shirt, scarf, and watch.  What makes this look pop is the colorful coral sport coat!  What a great contrast to all the black. This is definitely the perfect way to take basics to the next level with just one great piece. I also love the way he added a flower at the lapel. He also proves that a great smile is one of the best accessories ever. Bring on the color men!

Layered Up 2Layered Up

Layering starts with having a number of great fitting pieces that can be worn in numerous ways. This chap has all that covered and moreover, knows how to put it all together. The gingham shirt and the sweater vest harmonize together surprisingly well. The classic striped tie and cap are items that all guys should have in their wardrobe so they’re a no-brainer.  What I really like here is the traditional prep-style jacket that coincidentally I actually own as well! He gave me some great ideas on how to wear it in a more fashion-forward way.  It doesn’t exactly match the rest of the ensemble, but it is complementary and provides an anchor to the rest of the layering going on. That folks, is what makes it smart.  Classic off-white denim jeans are the perfect way to keep it sporty. This outfit would get an A+ in any guys look book.

Monochromatic Man 2Manly Monotone

Monotone means literally a lack of variety in color. However that doesn’t mean that wearing similar values of the same shade are boring. This guy came across to me as a rock star of the highest order. The un-tucked pinstripe button down, off white jeans, knit scarf, and leather motorcycle jacket in an oyster color, came together here to create a symphony of hip, in-the-know style. Have you noticed that a lot of guys are wearing beards these days?  Just like a woman’s hairstyle, facial hair on a man can also be a fashionable statement whether you like it or not.

So ladies, if your gent, or a style challenged friend, is lackluster in the wardrobe department, encourage the thought of trying some new ideas. Wearing colors other than denim blue, gray, black and khaki is not a crime. And by shopping at Goodwill for a few items to upgrade his look, he’ll not only help himself to some new style, but help his community through the programs Goodwill provides.  Now that is what I call a cool dude, right?
