When my oldest sister was a baby, my mother actually taped a girly satin bow to the top of her head because she lacked the required thick tresses to attach it to! What is it with bows? Are they popular because they’re the simplest adornment in the fashion world? Or, is it because they represent some idea of femininity? Or, is it both? Well, I would venture to say it’s both because clothing designers and moms alike have been using bows to gussy up their little ladies, as well as their fashion designs, for centuries. Heck, who would Minnie Mouse be without that iconic bow on top of her head? At the moment, bows add a soft whimsical appeal to so many items, and they can convey childlike appeal to even the most sophisticated couture. If you haven’t noticed their revival of late, let’s count the ways you can “tie” them into your current wardrobe rotation, shall we?
To state the obvious, who doesn’t know that ribbons have been used to decorate birthday and Christmas packages? What about satin ribbons tied in the hair to add sassy appeal? That is all well and good of course, but not everyone should wear a hair bow, headband or ponytail holder. You could run the risk of literally looking “over-wrapped!” Common sense tells us that this is the realm of children, cheerleaders, and perhaps the highest of haute couture only. Regular adult gals over 16 years old should avoid the hair bow trend at all costs!
That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy this glamorous accoutrement in another incarnation. The jewelry world has been captivated lately with the humble design of bows. Kate Spade gave us her take on the package wrapped bow last year to some acclaim. Although different from the traditional type of tied bow, it still featured a simple and recognizable look that was relatable and quirky at the same time. Other designers have followed suit with their own take, notably with bow-style rings, bracelets, earrings and necklaces. These are perfect for almost anyone style-wise because they range from very delicate designs, to big, bold and brassy in both size and coloration. A good rule of thumb would be to stick with something on the slighter side of the spectrum, because as I stated before, they can have a somewhat infantile look on the wrong person, or take a modern look into the realm of costume. Remember that with any trend, you don’t want to look like you’re trying too hard.
Bow bedecked shoes are an easy way to keep it super stylish without looking like foolhardy fashionista. From chic Chanel booties with bows up the vamp, to a sweet little flat tied with a loopy-satin ribbon, you just can’t go wrong! Likewise handbags have fun with this flirty accent. High-end designers and mall stores too have gotten their bow on to make sure everyone has access to the look.
The bow blouse has been huge on the fad wagon as of late, for that secretary- chic style. Numerous fashion show runways have featured this flouncy detail on many an evening gown, shift-dress, blouse, and skirt too. So apparently the trend has not piqued everyone’s interest quite yet!
Like I always reiterate, just because its in style doesn’t mean you should go crazy! Keep good taste and proportion in mind with whatever you wear and you’ll always have fashion success! That’s why your first stop quite often, when trying a trend on for size should be Goodwill! From vintage to new, you never know just what you’ll find to fill that fashion void, at a price that won’t tie your budget in knots!
