Hello Moto!

moto jacketTrend spotting is not an easy task for the fashion lover. The variations of hemlines, silhouette and fabrication can shift in oh so subtle ways in the blink of an eye. Trends can change so suddenly, in fact, that most of us are left scratching our heads wondering what all the fuss is really about. That’s why I’m here to suggest a few pointers for making the most of items that you may be able to find at Goodwill. Ongoing trends are really where great style comes from and adapting them to suit your personal style is always the way to go no matter what the so-called “experts” say.

One of the top classic trends is the motorcycle jacket, and all that the look can entail. This type of coat is reworked by designers year after year and season after season. Why? Because it is effortlessly cool when the fit and cut is right for you. The motorcycle culture is one that has fascinated designers for many decades. The edgy look of all the zippers, epaulets and leather can give almost anyone a longing for the open road!

Leather is the traditional tough guy/girl way to pull this off.  Stay away from coats that are too heavy looking. Instead lean more toward contemporary takes on this style that are made of lightweight leathers or high quality faux leathers. You can score extra points for finding jackets in neutrals like beige or gray, or jewel tones like red, emerald, navy, or even purple. Absolutely avoid patent leather because the stiff appearance and wet look sheen can and will always look cheap in my book.

For a sophisticated take on this trend, go for tweed wool. You may even find “moto” style jackets that are entirely made of fabric as well.  As long as the fit and proportion to your body is right, you’ll find this jacket an indispensable part of your wardrobe.

Details such as quilted lapels or shoulder treatments have a subtle way of bringing out the classic lines of the jacket. By all means, however, avoid the “heavy metal” look of studs and spikes, unless you’re a punk rocker, in a hard rock band, or are making a music video. For most of the public these looks are way too extreme and can appear as if you’re trying too hard.

colored jacketsSilhouettes of this “moto” look can be fitted as in the traditional jacket that bikers wear, or cropped for a more fashion-forward appeal. Longer lengths that hit around the mid hip length are also being spied on runways as well. These tend to look a little boxier and would be a great addition to your spring coat and jacket arsenal.

No matter how you roll, Goodwill is on your side to help you put your pedal to metal when it comes to style. So cruise on over to the storenear you and see how easily you can rev up your style for a lot less than retail!
