The Ins and Outs of Fashion for 2012 and Beyond

Posted by Jamie Klinger-Krebs on Dec 28, 2012 10:46:00 AM

DVF round sunglassesEvery year we are inundated with lists of what styles are in fashion and what styles are now considered passé. As you know, all lists are arbitrary in nature, meaning that in the end our own opinion is what matters most. As a style and fashion watcher for many years, it is always fun for me to do an in and out list of my own, and here is what I came up with …

greenIn:  Emerald green has been named by the powers that be, as the “it” color of 2013.  While not new on the scene, look for invigorated use of this rich jewel tone in fashions on the runways, and then on the racks at stores everywhere.

Out:  No matter what anyone says, scrunchies for holding your ponytail in check will always be a fashion mistake, unless you’re going to a “90210” party.

pencil skirtIn: Leather pencil skirts in a knee grazing length. Short skirts have taken a backseat to the sexy, yet covered up look of the long pencil skirt. Paired with everything from ruffles to t-shirts, this is a must have.

Out:  Even though everyone is pushing the return of the crop top, I have a feeling that it will be a short-lived love affair. Just like the low-rise jean, showing too much skin is never a good idea.

round glassesIn:  Round shaped sunglasses that look like a cross between Mr. Magoo and Jackie Onassis will be making the scene for this summer and beyond. While I think of them as a more classic style, add a pair to your collection of sun spectacles for a well-rounded fashion sensibility this coming year.

Out:  Enormous handbags have never really made the top of any of my lists.  Awkwardly oversized bags often overwhelm the woman who is carrying them.  Just say no to slouchy bags that look as though you’re bringing a weekend’s worth of stuff with you on a daily basis.

blazerIn: Prep school polish has made it back from the 80’s and 90’s. This time don’t pair your school-boy blazer with a polo shirt, instead keep it crisp with a cotton button down and vest. Menswear looks are still on the uptick as far as I’m concerned, so invest in a blazer if you haven’t already!

Out:  Bandage dresses and all things skin tight, that make you look as if you’re auditioning for an inappropriate reality show.  Just remember, leaving something to the imagination isn’t such a bad thing.

studsIn: Punk rock studs on everything.  From shoes to jackets, the steam-punk trend has put us all in a more rebellious mood.  Rock it with a wristband or go for it big time with a leather-studded coat. Make your own items using studs from a craft store for the ultimate punk rock transformation of almost anything.

Out:  Enormous blocky platform shoes like the ones the Kardashian ladies seem to favor. Contrary to popular belief, beige platform shoes do not go with everything!

tapestryIn:  Tapestry fabric in clothing and accessories has manifested itself in so many ways. Dovetailing with the trend toward more romantic and vintage looks, this baroque fabric looks fresh when done in a frame handbag, fitted blazer, or even a corset. Pair with denim and lots of vintage inspired jewelry for an up to date effect.

Out:  Low-rise jeans and skirts have been on the outs for a while now.  I am talking about the ultra low, not the just below the waist rise that seems to be settling in as the norm.

wedgeIn:  Wedge booties and sneakers add height and a playful touch to everything from dresses to leggings. Keep an eye out for all kinds of variations on this trend in the upcoming year!

As you know, what is always in style is trying new- to-you looks economically by shopping at your local Goodwill Store & Donation Center.  Fashion may come and go, but the motto of reduce, reuse and recycle will forever be a trend that we ALL can get behind!
