Catty Couture

bow shirtsThere are lots of silly names for fashion trends, like “middy”, “maxi”, “mini”, “high/low”, or even the “mullet” dress. But, have you heard of the “pussy bow” blouse? Yes, it seems as though only Cat Woman would approve of this look; but fear not. Pussy bow is simply the official name for any shirt that goes out of its way to promote enormous, feminine tie bows on the front. Once again as I always say, this look is not completely new or unheard of. This is more of a movement that comes and goes with the tides of fashion, just like that elusive cat that hides under the bed and only comes out for a little attention once in a while. I am all for utilizing the pussy bow-blouse trend to perk up items that you may already have in your wardrobe and bringing them back from the edge of blandness. Recently I noticed that our first lady has been spotted wearing blouses with bows on the campaign trail, and since she is known for her love of American flavored sportswear and separates, this just about seals its approval rating!

There are lots of variations out there when it comes to the style of bow blouses, so let’s see where some of them might fit your fashion profile.

bow shirtsSheer

These kinds of blouses always remind me of the ultra-feminine styles popular in the 1930’s, when working girls in offices dressed to the nines. The only thing to be careful of here is what you wear underneath it. If this is to be worn for work, you must have a camisole that keeps it all looking appropriate, without question.  I think these sheers do look great peeking out from under a jacket, or worn alone with aforementioned camisole, and belted pencil skirt.

Shine and shimmer, especially when done in some of the season’s bright jewel- tone colors, can really pep up somber neutral office separates. Since the bow adds a large element to the blouse, you must make sure that the body of the blouse remains well fitted to your figure. You don’t want to end up looking like a buccaneer with too many ruffles and flounces. Wear the one that feels most appropriate to you and your wardrobe needs. Slimmer cut blouses simply work better under jackets, sweaters, and other garments.

bow shirtsPrints

Prints are always a little tricky when it comes to fussier looks like this. It is easy for a printed blouse to appear matronly on a younger woman. How would you avoid this pitfall? Simply by sticking to tried-and-true prints like stripes and polka dots. Polka dots look fresh year-round, and are a perfect choice of pattern for most women. Floral can be just as becoming in a blouse, but steer clear of pasty pastels and go for a more powerful posy print. Paisley is also another classic standby in this realm that never goes out of style. Just realize that if you feel like you’re wearing grandma’s curtains, this would not be the blouse for you!

So summon up your inner kitty the next time you’re shopping at the Goodwill Store & Donation Center near you and carefully scan the racks of blouses for inspiration on this popular trend. Who knows, you may just find the “purr-fect” bow blouse for your fall and winter wardrobe needs!
