Twinkle, Twinkle You're the Star!

Casually Chic2When it comes to spotting trends for fall fashions, you can’t do any better than eyeing up the crowd that attends Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York City. I just returned from my 10-day trip, and upon looking through the thousands of photographs I took, I noticed a tidal wave of sparkle. There were light reflecting sequins (a small round flat piece of shiny metal or plastic that is sewn onto clothing for decoration, usually in large numbers), and paillettes (a large sequin or spangle sewn onto a piece of clothing) all over the place as they say. This definitely puts the seal of approval on getting your shine on for fall this year.  Tops, skirts, and dresses, vied for attention with collars, handbags and shoes when it came to glitter and glamour.  Let’s take a look at a couple of pictures I took of people wearing this trend and how you could easily adapt it for your own fashion-forward fall wardrobe.

Casually Chic #1

I spotted this young lady at the fashion show for designer Chris Benz at Avery Fisher Hall. What I love about this outfit is that it perfectly illustrates how to wear something flashy for daytime. The top is cut like a tunic with its ¾-length sleeves and a-line shape. This makes it a wonderful pairing with her distressed denim- jean cutoffs. If you take a close look here, you’ll also notice that she has on little to no other accessories. The cardinal rule of wearing something as elaborate as this top is to tone down everything else. She chose a simple suede high-heeled clog to complete her ensemble. The look is fresh and approachable without being too much!  When you’re out looking for a beaded or sequined top, keep in mind that a looser fit will make it seem more casual. (You might also note that the model in yellow in the background is sporting a paillette poncho!)

DoneUp2Done up Diva #2

I stopped in my tracks when I saw this gal, because I liked her style so much.  She has on an interesting mix here. She’s taken a two-piece paillette-covered top and skirt, and broken it up by wearing a burgundy-chiffon blouse under the top for a layered effect leaving the bottom of the blouse un-tucked. This came across as a entirely new way to wear these pieces! I think it gave the outfit more of a daytime look. Meanwhile she’s added a gold necklace and a Grecian-inspired headband for good measure. Simple ivory pumps add just the right touch to bring it all together. This is truly thinking outside the box in a good way!

In the picture to the right, is celebrity-stylist June Ambrose (left) who is wearing bright prints, mixed for a chic effect and always looks fabulous. But this isn’t about her. I was really drawn to her friend on the right. She’s wearing a sequined pencil skirt in sea foam green, paired with an angora sweater in royal blue. This combination was both flattering and colorful, as these tones work well together. Once more, this shows us how a more casual piece like the sweater can bring down the shine in a sophisticated way. Her statement necklace is pretty spectacular, and along with the earrings creates a frame for her lovely face.  This is a woman who is a vibrant, shining example of how to sparkle with confidence.

So if you’re drawn to shiny objects like the proverbial magpie, take these hints and tips from some of the country’s top fashion folks and run to the Goodwill Store and Donation Center in your neighborhood.  You know that you’ll be able to snatch up all the glitter and glamour you can for fall, at a price that will leave you twinkling with joy!
