Flat Out Fabulous

Posted by Jamie Klinger-Krebs on Feb 29, 2012 4:00:00 PM

Every decade or so, since their heyday in the 1950’s, the ballet flat and its relations, come on strong in fashion yet again. The simple shoe with little or no heel is parading down runways and streets once more with a renewed sense of purpose. Often thought to be a girlish look, the ballet flat epitomizes a gamine appeal when paired with the full circle skirts of the Dior era (Remember Leslie Caron in “An American in Paris”?). That exaggerated silhouette of longer, softer skirts was a good match for the simple slipper. Currently trending on the fashion scene, the flat shoe has a lot to offer the woman of today in her quest for everyday elegance. Let’s take a look at some cool options in style and fabrication that can take your outfit from drab to fab in no time!goodwill shoes

At the Goodwill Store & Donation Center I frequent, I’m always drawn by the color, texture and design of hundreds of shoes for sale. To illustrate just how easy it is to find awesome deals at our favorite store, here are the high fashion flats I discovered while casually scanning the racks.

  1. Keeping on trend with the bright colors so prevalent in fashion now, how about these brand new Peter Millar suede loafers in a wonderful bright green for just $9.99!
  2. To keep things light and neutral, think ahead to spring! I found these brand new Dexter leather flats with fantastic laser cut floral details in refreshing white leather. They are completely in style for just $6.99.
  3. To capture both the snakeskin AND metallic inclination, how about these new Jasmin metallic leather flats with wonderful geometric reptile detailing on the toes? For just $9.99, you’ll be well on your way to modish perfection.

Flats can add a lot of pizzazz to whatever you wear, but there are some rules of thumb for making the most of their appeal:amazing goodwill shoes

  1. Flats look their best when paired with longer, more flowing skirts. The just-above-the-knee to mid-calf dirndl skirts are perfect for sporting with flats. They create a romantic and timeless silhouette like Leslie Caron’s. Make sure you reduce the volume in the top you wear with a longer skirt. This will emphasize the movement of the skirt as you comfortably walk about in your classy flats.
  2. Flats look great with denim, but take into consideration the length of the jeans. When flats are worn with longer or wider jeans, like boot cuts or flares, they don’t work as well. A hem dragging on the ground looks sloppy and unkempt. The best types of jeans to wear with flats are anything from skinny to straight-legged varieties. In a flash, this heel-less shoe can dress up a t-shirt and jeans for an effortless look of casual chic. Top it off with a statement belt and handbag and you’re all set.
  3. Flats can conjure up a youthful attitude when worn with dresses that have a flowing skirt or soft draping and add a sense of fun to a smart look. Ideal for the office or jobs that require a lot of walking, a great pair of flats is definitely clever thinking.goodwill fashion trends

Like I always say, fabulous fashion doesn’t know what you paid for it, so why pay more? Visit the Goodwill Store & Donation Center near you to step up to the footwear fashion plate in no time flat…and that’s no joke!
